Don’t count sheep; talk to the shepherd.
The shepherd being Jesus of course.
Then what happens?!! Yes right in the middle of the conversation either your mind wanders off or else you fall asleep!
Well, I don’t have a problem with falling asleep; that was the idea in the first place, but, allowing my mind to wander?
Just that happened to me the other week. I was sitting reading; someone else’s thoughts as it happens and at the end of it I shut my eyes. I was gossiping with Jesus and before I knew it I had dozed off. I think my lovely lunch and the warmth of the sun had something to do with it! My mind had wandered away from my chat, other things had taken precedence and I woke up very abruptly with the feeling that all was not quite right.
How did that happen? Where did those thoughts come from? They certainly were nothing to do with my gossip with Jesus, neither did they make a great deal of sense to me.
It did prompt me however to write this article though. It struck me that while we are counting sheep we still need to be alert; a contradiction in itself I hear you say, however.
Whoever dwells in the shelter of the Most High will rest in the shadow of the Almighty, or as the Message says it “God, you’re my refuge. I trust in you and I’m safe!”
I realised that in sleep we are more vulnerable to the enemy; we are not on our guard as it were, so therefore we need to ask the Father to protect us even in slumber. Psalm 4:8 says
In peace I will lie down and sleep,
for you alone, Lord,
make me dwell in safety.
