I was feeling so pleased with myself. I wanted to thank a person who without realising had stirred a thought in my heart which not only inspired me to write last month’s article, but brought with it a greater realisation of just what God has done for me.
I’m not good at doing such things, but I was determined to make an extra special effort because this person was going through a particularly difficult time. I don’t even know them very well, but still I must put myself out to speak to them; I so wanted to encourage them.
The table was turned on me! I was truly blessed by their response. As I spoke with them their faces lit up and the grateful response that was given made me feel very humble. There I was believing I was the one doing the good deed when in fact I felt I was receiving so much more than I gave.
I began to examine my attitude towards God, feeling pleased with myself when an idea I had to serve God turns out well, thinking God will be pleased with my efforts, when in reality it was God that made it happen and God who was giving me the blessing.
We need to be mindful that we are the ones in debt to God and that God will never be in debt to us.
If we allow it to be, life is full of disappointments. How often have I said “I despair” and then there’s always someone worse off.
1 Thessalonians 5:11 says “Encourage one another and build each other up’.”
Not easy some days is it?
It is The Lord who goes before you.
He will be with you.
He will not leave you or forsake you. Deuteronomy 31:8.
In the end it’s not about ME!
