Fruit

No I don’t mean the apples and pears kind, although they are very much in our thoughts at the present time. As I write, the fruit trees are so picturesque with all the blossom bursting forth; the sign of new life and a much welcome thought that summer is on its way. I love this time of the year.

By the time you read this we will be well into Easter; yet another sign of new life, when Jesus died on the cross, but rose again on the third day. What a glorious day for us all; the opportunity of a new life in Him.

I digress! What about this fruit I hear you say.

They are the fruit of the Spirit; a biblical term that sums up the attributes of a person. Jesus left us the Spirit when He ascended to be with His Father so that we might have a guide and a helper in our time of need.

In Him we can experience the fruit of, love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control. Galatians 5:22-23.

We tend to think of the fruit of the Spirit as a list of good Christian virtues to adopt instead of seeing it as an invitation to mirror the character of Christ.

I don’t know about you but self-control and patience need a great deal of working on in my life. Thank goodness that I have the help of the Holy Spirit to steer me in the right direction. Together we’re working on them!

Just like physical fruit needs time to grow, so also does the fruit of the Spirit and as we mature in faith, likewise our spiritual fruit will also mature as we become more like Jesus.
