It is amazing how quickly the year is going! At the end of this article are the April walks which will be the last of this season. We don’t walk once the temperatures start to rise, although at the minute it has been grey and rainy for almost a week and we even had to cancel a walk as it was muddy underfoot and no views. One of our precious SWARM walks was cancelled as the walk leader has a ruptured Achilles tendon. Get well soon David. It has been a relatively quiet month with only three WARM walks and one SWARM.

On 21st January Steve and Fiona led a merry band on a steep ascent above Moratalla. You can see the fabulous group shot with a stunning background. The walk started at the arches and went round the back of Moratalla and up the Ruta de Agua to Santo Cristo and returned via the route of the cross. It was certainly one to stretch the legs.

The next walk on 27th January, led by Tony and Judy, saw a small but enthusiastic group enjoy the walk from Los Granidicos. The leaders said “The weather was perfect, the views were stunning and the company even better. Later we all enjoyed a drink in Moratalla; the perfect end. Thank you all for joining us.”

The SWARMers set off on a 7km walk around Calasparra countryside. It was led by Paul and Yvonne and ably assisted by June (just as well as one of the leaders missed an obvious turning – chatting too much!!). It was a chilly start, but the sun came out eventually.

The final WARM walk was led by Carla and Douwe and it was certainly a challenge! The walk started from the picnic area at la Navela, near Blanca. We walked up on a wide track to a viewing point where we could see Blanca and the reservoir. The next section was very interesting ridge-walking until we got to a section where we enjoyed the lovely views straight down to the Segura River and the villages of Ulea and Ojós. After the climb, in the wind, we found a sheltered picnic spot. The photos speak for themselves.

We have had some seasonal visitors this year in our group and Sue and John said “Thanks to you all for showing us around the hills in the Murcia area. We have really enjoyed the walks and company – you made us very welcome. We will continue to tick off the walks in ‘the book’ whilst we’re here and hope to be back at some point. Happy walking everyone.”
