This month marks the beginning of the Royal British Legions (RBL) Annual Poppy Appeal.
Here in Spain, as in the UK, this year’s events will represent an even more poignant moment in our lives than normal as it follows on so closely after the sad passing of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II and that event is still raw in our emotions. We held a moving Memorial Service for Her Majesty on 20th September in the Memorial Garden on Camposol A, Mazarrón.
Here in Murcia our Poppy Appeal Co-ordinator is Lesley Anderson. She is driving our Poppy Appeal forward in order to deliver the RBL’s key aim in supporting not only serving and ex-service personnel, but also their families. To this aim, the Poppy Appeal is the principal opportunity for us to generate funds to support the Charity in its endeavours and we look forward to your support. In this aim it really is a case of ‘every euro counts’.
It’s not often understood, but all revenue generated by the Poppy Appeal here in Spain, remains in Spain. It supports the RBL across mainland Spain and the Balearic Islands by providing funding for our local Community Support activities and also the Welfare services managed by Spain District North.
We are extremely fortunate here in the Murcia area to benefit from our experienced Branch Community Support Officer (Mrs Billie Graham-Thomas). She organises and delivers a range of local support services ranging from hospital and home visits to help with applications for assistance from UK charities and government departments.
Our branch members meets on a regular basis at social events organised by the RBL. These are entertaining and fun, but also a good way to fund raise for our charity. We also appreciate help during Poppy Appeal with our table top events, so if you have some spare time do please get in touch.
