2021 Poppy Appeal Launch and Remembrance Day Murcia Branch Royal British Legion
What an amazing few weeks for the Murcia Branch of the Royal British Legion Spain. After an unfortunate start to the poppy tide this year, we picked up and carried on.
We were granted one day this year to collect in Consum on Camposol B due to a change in district manager and this we held on 29th October 2021. We would like to acknowledge and thank Consum staff and manager for all the help they provide us.
We were then granted permission to collect on Camposol B by the Business Association and we were allowed several dates which were all attended very well.
We must also mention with thanks the very kind people who donated cups of hot drinks to our volunteer collectors as it was pretty darn chilly on a couple of the days! Our collectors are very passionate about what we do and we know just how much your generous donation helps people in our region.
On 10th November we had two stalls collecting; the first one was with the Poppy Appeal Coordinator Lesley Anderson and Branch Community Support representative and Welfare Caseworker Billie Graham-Thomas collecting on Camposol B outside Costa Café with kind permission of the owner Nick Martin-Chapman. The second stall was manned by our Chairperson Carl Thomas and our Social Secretary Mr David Haynes who were collecting at the Club de Golf, Camposol C during their Poppy Appeal Tournament.
There was an amazing turn out of people for the Remembrance Day Service arranged by Los Palacios Gardening and Community Group with a last-minute change of Padres from Duncan and Pat Tart to Arthur Laws (a veteran) of The Olive Branch Church.
The Murcia Branch Standard Bearer Mr Terry Murphy (a veteran) and Poppy Appeal Coordinator Lesley Anderson manned the Poppy table.
David Haynes (a veteran) our Social Secretary was in attendance and Carl Thomas (a veteran) our Chairperson took the Two Minute Silence. (He then went the immediate aid of a member of the public who was having a medical issue).
Billie Graham-Thomas (a veteran), was asked to read the Soldier’s Poem and the Remembrance Exhortation.
Wreaths were laid on behalf of the Murcia Branch RBL by Billie Graham-Thomas and Carl Thomas who also took The Salute.
Wreaths were also laid by:
Mike Cater (a veteran) President of the Ex-Servicemen’s Association Mazarrón District.
Patricia Maltby on behalf the Merchant Navy.
Also in attendance were:
The Mayor of Mazarrón, Gaspar Miras.
The First Lieutenant Major, Ginas Campillo.
Councillor of International Relations and Camposol, Silvana Elisabetta Buxton.
Councillor of Environment, Placidea Gomez
Councillor of Tourism, Raquel Raja.
Later on that day our Chairperson Carl Thomas accepted a donation of 300€ from Greenfingers Gardening Group, raised by their memorial garden display.
We must thank the kind volunteers of the Ex-Servicemen’s Association of Mazarrón District and for the volunteer collectors on Condado de Alhama for their valiant efforts collecting for the RBL Poppy Appeal 2021.
Finally, Tony Pompey Day and his wife Lynn Day raised 360€ from an event held at their villa in aid of the RBL Murcia Branch. Once the Poppy boxes have been collected and the final figure acknowledged we will announce how much this year’s collection raised. Before that we would like to acknowledge and thank every single person who put a donation into the tins, held functions and golf tournaments in the aid of the RBL Murcia Branch. This will mean so much to our serving members, our veterans and their families. Thank You So Very Much.
