What’s going on in February at St Nicholas Church

Friday Feb 14thSt Valentine’s Day Coffee and Cake afternoon 2pm-5pm in the Church.

Shrove Tuesday is known in many countries as Mardi Gras which means Fat Tuesday. Traditionally Shrove Tuesday is the day we empty the cupboards of all the fats, butter & eggs in readiness for Lent. These days it seems it is just known as Pancake Day.

Tuesday February 25thShrove Tuesday Pancake Party 2pm–5pm

At St Nicholas our Pancake Party will have lots of Pancakes with many choices of toppings; some of which you would never have thought of – Oxo!!, but usually Lemon, Honey, Fresh Fruit, Cream or Jam. We have Tossing the Pancake games during a fun afternoon before we begin Lent as Jesus spent 40 days and 40 nights in the desert in prayer and going without food.

In Lent we too are challenged to make space – a desert space in our lives – in order to face up to choices and their consequences in our lives. Traditionally we face up to our addictions by giving up things like alcohol, cigarettes, television, gambling or drugs.

Is this Lent going to make any difference to our lives?

Whatever you choose to do this Lent, whether it be fasting, giving up those addictions, or prayer, do it without counting the cost.

Maybe Lent means nothing to you.

We often start out with good intentions, then gradually lose interest finding the going hard and give up. It is how we respond when things go wrong that really matters. If you find yourself not quite managing to do what you had thought you would, don’t be put off. Regroup your thoughts and continue with your ‘Lenten’ task. Remember it is not meant to be easy – it is a challenge.

One idea I am toying with this year is to make a few minutes each day to really think about my life and if there are any areas that I need to change. This will be my prayer and contemplation time.
