Blessings in a Shoebox!
One of the charities we support as a church is called ‘Operación Niño de la Navidad’ or ‘Operation Christmas Child’. It is run by the Christian charity Samaritan’s Purse and organises for shoeboxes filled with goodies to be sent out to deprived children in impoverished parts of the world.
It is a genius idea, but the execution is something else!
The boxes leave our shores nearly stacked in container ships but when they reach their destination the hard work really begins. The onward journeys are often long and arduous, difficult and dangerous, costly on every level. However, the end result is so worth it. We who are so blessed can be a blessing to others.
So, what does it take to fill a shoebox?
Samaritan’s Purse suggest these various categories of gifts:
Something to learn with, something to wear, something to be clean with, something to play with and something to love.
The boxes are graded for different age groups: 2-4 years, 5-9 years and 10-14 years and
in addition, Samaritan’s Purse add a wonderfully put together booklet called ‘The Greatest Journey.’ This invites the children to take up the opportunity, if they wish, to learn more about Jesus Christ and the hope that the Christian faith offers whatever our situations.
However, the ministry of Operación Niño de la Navidad would not happen without the dedication of many volunteers and that’s where you can be part of this important ministry. Throughout this year, why not begin collecting together items that can fill a shoebox and bring pleasure.
