What’s love got to do with it…
It’s February and once again love is in the air as St Valentine’s Day makes another appearance. When asked if he was in love, Prince Charles once famously replied, “Whatever that means.” So, what do we mean by love?
Our English language has but one word to describe how we love ice cream, love our family and love our spouses but they are quite different things in so many ways.
Whilst I would not want to be a party-pooper in any way, those of us who have lived a while and know what a relationship is all about, I’m sure, can vouch for the fact that love is more than simple romance.
it’s more than feelings… it’s the difference between being ‘in love’ and continuing to love through thick and thin – when reality kicks in.
it’s more than physical attraction… yes, there’s the thrill of meeting and the excitement of getting to know someone special but time marches on, waistlines increase and hair disappears!
And it’s more than fate… you know, he or she must be ‘the one’ so everything is going to be OK for ever and ever Amen.
Being ‘in love’ is just for a season whilst continuing ‘to love’ is for the long haul; it’s a marathon not a sprint.
One of the most famous passages of all in the Bible speaks about what it means to continue to love through thick and thin. And, just because it comes from the Bible does not mean that is automatically religious gobbledegook – far from it, this is real down to earth nuts and bolts common sense. It speaks of things that love is and things that love isn’t!
It is patient and kind; it is not jealous or boastful.
It is truthful and caring; it is not proud or rude.
It is trusting and full of hope, it is not demanding or bearing of grudges.
Of course, this is not an easy thing to live out in everyday life; when it’s raining, when you’ve got to go to work, when money is short and the kids won’t stop complaining!
One modern version of the Bible expresses it like this: “Love puts up with anything, trusts God always, always looks for the best, never looks back, and keeps on going to the end.”
As we come to another Valentine’s Day and we are encouraged to push the boat out on something extra special for the one we love, then let us enjoy such moments but never forget what, or who, keeps our love firmly grounded and secure.
Here at Salt Church Los Alcazares, we are just ordinary people who believe and trust in an extraordinary God. Currently we are in transition, so to find out where and when we are meeting each week, do check out our Facebook page or click on our website for up-to-date information.
Kind regards and every blessing
