An entry of fifty competitors representing eight European countries for a three day event at Torrevieja demonstrated that the International One Metre (IOM) radio controlled yacht is truly an international class. Hosted by the Real Club Nautico Torrevieja over May 10th-12th, skippers representing Austria, Croatia, France, Italy, The Netherlands, Portugal, Turkey and, of course, Spain competed for the trophy.

Spanish National Champion Guillermo Beltri, languishing in ninth place at the end of day one, recovered his form to take first place at the end of day three. Pierluigi Puthod of Italy and Ante Kovacevic of Croatia took second and third places respectively.

Highest placed entry from Murcia Region was Jose Carreno representing CN Los Nietos in sixth place. Five of our Group members competed and highest placed was Stuart Lockwood at 43rd with Richard Leech right behind!

On our home water the Spring Cup series ended with an overall win for Terry Morden with Juan J Parraga in second place and Richard Leech third; particularly encouraging results for Juan in his first season and for Richard who missed two weeks racing through illness. Held over seven weeks with a total of fifteen skippers taking part, the result was hotly contested, with two skippers tying for fourth and fifth places, only one point behind Richard’s third place score.

We are now competing for the Julian Hook Trophy at our regular Wednesday meetings. This series will conclude at the end of June when we take a break until September.
