Is There More? – Or Is This The End?

Many of us use clichés as a means to comfort a grieving family such as “Well they have had a good life”; “They are out of their pain now”; or “They are not suffering anymore”, but are they said with knowledge or something we just say without understanding.

Do you know what lies beyond the grave?  Have you ever really thought about it?   Why do so many say things about what they possibly know nothing about?

In Luke 23 verses 32 -43 we see a different picture unfolding between two thieves:

One goes on to eternal life with Jesus and the other misses out completely, totally separated and out of heaven (paradise).

Let’s look at the story from verses 39-43:

One of the criminals who hung there hurled insults at Him (Jesus) saying “Aren’t you the Christ? Save yourself and us!”

The other criminal rebuked him, “Don’t you fear God since You are under the same sentence? We are punished justly, for we are getting what our deeds deserve, but this man has done nothing wrong”.  Then he said, “Jesus, remember me when you come into Your kingdom”. Jesus answered him, “I tell you the truth today; you will be with Me in paradise”.

This thief recognized several things about himself and Jesus.

1. He feared God.

2. His punishment was just.

3. He says of Jesus: this man has done nothing wrong, therefore he is unjustly punished.

4. He must have read and believed the sign above Jesus’ head “This is the King of the Jews”.

5. Recognizing Jesus as King; “Jesus, remember me when you come into your Kingdom”.

6. Jesus recognized the thief’s acknowledgment of his sin and just punishment and his desire to be with him.

There are many times when I want to cry out to people for them to call out to Jesus as the thief did.  Only Jesus can save anyone by repenting, confessing their sin and turning from unbelief and rejection of Him.

Jesus says John 14 verse 6; “I am the way the truth and the life”.

We have to come to Him by way of the cross because there will be no-one in Heaven who has not been marked by the cross of Jesus Christ and cleansed with His precious, blood through repentance.  We have to accept that He has paid the price for our sins which cost Him his very life upon the cross in the place of you and me.

This is called GRACE – God’s Riches At Christ’s Expense.

This is salvation unto eternal life with Jesus, Revelation 21 verse 1-4; “He will dwell with His people and be their God promising a new Heaven and earth. He will wipe every tear from their eyes. There will be no more death or mourning or crying or pain, for the old order of things has passed away.”

If the above is in store for the believer I wonder what you think or believe eternity holds for the unbeliever? The opposite maybe?

Pride can be our obstacle we know best and so stay in our sinful rejection of Jesus.  Holding these thoughts at death makes them eternal.

But Acts 2 verse 21 “Everyone who calls on the name of the Lord Jesus will be saved”.  Will you call?
