I Have Loved You With An Everlasting Love (Jeremiah 31 verse 3)

We looked at Mary’s words of worship of Jesus “My soul glorifies the Lord” and “My spirit rejoices in God my Saviour” and how they must have resounded even louder 33 years later after Jesus’ death and resurrection within her.  Her heart must have skipped so many beats when she saw her son, her Saviour and Redeemer risen from the dead and alive.

On hearing the news that the tomb was empty, two disciples, Peter and John (describes himself as ‘the disciple whom Jesus loved’) went to the tomb in disbelief but discovered it to be true.

John 20 verses 4-8 tell that John arrived first, but didn’t go. Peter did go in and came out and went away wondering; Luke 24 verse 12.  John then goes inside and sees the blood-stained burial cloth and strips of linen lying there and John 20 says “He saw and believed”.

Seeing Christ Jesus hanging and dying on the cross must have sent shock waves through his body, like Mary, but seeing the empty tomb stirred up real believe and trust in Jesus as his Lord and Saviour.  To have that solid trust and belief that you are loved by the person who died to save you and give you eternal life must have been a real reality check.  The disciples and Mary were no different from you and me. Each one of us has the same need to come to the realization that we need Jesus who died to save us from our sin. Upon our repentance we receive his cleansing and forgiveness so that the Holy Spirit can dwell within us to teach and guide us.

This is the only way to enter into the eternal love of God.

The message of the cross is the centre of Christianity and distinguishes it from all other religions and along with it comes eternal life and the blessedness of the indwelling of the Holy Spirit in the soul.  These distinguishing marks are of such a nature as to be wholly above and beyond the reach of man.  They come from and through revelation and knowledge of Jesus Christ and him alone by his Spirit.

John 3 verse 16; “For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son that whosoever believes in Him shall not perish but have eternal life”.

God’s love is eternal to all who put their faith and trust in Him.  John, Mary Jesus’ mother and Peter all knew that eternal love and you too could and say along with John “I am the disciple whom Jesus loves”.

We pray that you may know that love of God through his Son Jesus.

God bless you, keep well and safe.
