What a mix – COVID-19 and Brexit!
The Valencian Championships were scheduled to be played at Greenlands Bowling Club and La Marina Bowling Club from 16th-29th September and at the time of writing my report it was going ahead although the entries were down by 50% on last year mainly due to COVID-19, but still a good number of players entered to make it a challenging event.

At the August meeting of the LLB (the governing body of bowling in Spain) a Generic Protocol was issued for all clubs to follow to keep members as safe as possible from Coronavirus. The wearing of masks on the rink is optional, but recommended.
On the agenda for the next LLB meeting, Brexit is most likely to be discussed as this could affect the second half of the winter leagues after Christmas, depending on the rules for non-resident bowlers being able to stay long enough to see the season through.
Mazarrón Bowls Club follow a protocol of sanitizing all the equipment that is used before a game commences, meaning a lot of deep cleaning of all the equipment is done to try to keep members safe. Even though the days have been hot there has been a good turnout of around 15 bowlers turning up to the twice weekly roll ups, enjoying some exercise and a social distancing chat afterwards which is what it’s all about!
The snowbirds will be returning this month, ready to join the knockout rounds of the Club Championships 2021 which are now underway. Results and photo of the Mazarron Trophy will be published in next month’s report.
Rocket Ron

Mazarrón Bowls Club has been going since 2006 and several founder members are still playing in the club, one being Ron Potts our most senior member, nearing 88 years of age. Ron enjoys his bowls and can be found at the weekly roll-ups, playing for the club in the LLB leagues and entering the club competitions. In 2019 his mixed rinks team won the 2019 Club Championship.
We will welcome new members to come and join us at our home rink at Hacienda del Alamo. We roll up on Tuesdays and Thursdays at 9.30am during the summer months. At present we have to abide by the latest COVID-19 rules which require several steps to be taken before going out onto the rink, but so far everything has worked well and members have been enjoying the banter whilst exercising and then distance socializing over a drink afterwards.
Please see the Club website www.mazarronbowlsclub.com for up-to-date information or give our secretary Harry a ring on 619 349 671
We look forward to seeing you and have bowls available for you to use. Stay safe.
