A Snow Bird’s Swan Song!

Getting sunny days to play our Championship finals was a bonus as it was the last opportunity this season to have all the finalists available to play, as the 90 day Brexit rule meant two finalists, who between them were in seven of nine finals, had to go home to the UK not knowing when they will return due to COVID-19 restrictions.

Shaun Armstrong, playing in his first bowling championship finals, won Men’s Triples with Clive Hoyal and Jim Coughlan; a great achievement and boost for a new bowler.

Gillian Morris and Helen Chambers won Ladies’ Pairs making it their third time winning this title together, but they will be unable to go forward to the LLB Champion of Champions 2021 in April as it has been cancelled due to COVID-19. It was cancelled last year for the same reason which means that Gillian and Helen’s Champion of Champions Ladies’ Pairs 2019 win remains undefeated.

Mazarrón Bowls Club has made the decision not to enter a team into the LLB 2021/22 Southern Triples League which means our mascot octopuses will not be venturing away to other clubs later this year.

The club has not been able to hold many events and competitions lately to raise money for MABS our chosen charity, but funds have been boosted with wrong bias being played.  A bowler donates 1€ for bowling a wood with the bias on the wrong side, causing the wood to curve the wrong way and end up on an adjacent rink!  The results of the MABS Trophy Competition held at the end of April can found on the Mazarrón Bowls Club Facebook page.

If you would like to try a new sport in 2021 or wish to play bowls again, please give Harry our secretary a ring on 619 349 671. He will have all the up to-date COVID-19 protocol and information regarding our roll-ups on Tuesdays and Thursdays held at Hacienda del Alamo.  Our website is www.mazarronbowlsclub.com

Sadly, mainly due to COVID-19 and Brexit, this is my ‘swan song’ reporting on behalf of Mazarrón Bowls Club for the Costa Cálida Chronicle; a great magazine to read, full of local news, events and information.

Members will be able to post club news, events and photos on the Mazarrón Bowls Club Facebook page for readers to view.
