Alan Benton delivers in full flight.

How Time Flies!
It is only just March and yet so much seems to have happened since the beginning of the year! For a start the domestic Winter Triples League, played over nine weeks from November, has come to a conclusion with the threesome of Kerry Henry/Colin Appleton/ Alan Benton finishing top of the pile, but only one point ahead of Anne Macfarlane/Andrew Bunce/Mark Bettcher. The competition has been particularly hard fought this year with the first five teams covered by only 4 points and separated on cumulative shot difference.

With the Triples League completed, members are now focused on the Finals of the Club Championships in eleven categories to be played at Hacienda on Saturday/Sunday 9th/10th March. Altogether there will be 25 members engaged across the board, thereby reflecting a high standard of play across the membership. This year again past multi Champion Helen Chambers will be competing in five Finals while Alan Bento will appear in four Finals with his principal target being success in the Men’s Singles for the first time after past disappointments.

Helen Chambers Champion of Champions 2017

The LLB Inter Club Leagues are progressing to a finish with six or so games to complete. Mazarrón Mariners in the South Alicante Winter League played on Mondays and are almost predictably following a pattern by winning handsomely at home and then failing at away venues. With the remaining matches evenly split between home and away, it looks as though the Mariners will end up in a position around mid-table which would be a good outcome for their first season in the Discovery Division after promotion. On the other hand the story for Mazarrón Miners in the Friday LLB Southern League is exceptional in their bid to regain promotion back to the first division after only one season. At the moment of reporting, the team is maintaining its consistent lead right from the beginning of the season and are currently 18 points clear at the top of the league with 4 away matches and 2 at home still to play. It looks as though the team merits rejoining arguably the premier division and league in Spain, although there is no room for complacency and performance must be maintained.

Nina McKenzie, Ladies Singles Finalist, Spanish Nationals 2015

The Club’s AGM has just been held to review the Club’s business and reflect on the past year. In that regard we note that former member and past Ladies’ Champion Nina McKenzie has carried our name to the South Coast by winning the Miraflores Open Mixed Pairs. In March, ten days or so after the Championship Finals, we will have our Annual Awards Lunch and at the end of the month there will be competition for the MABS Trophy donated by MABS.

New members are always welcome.
