What a Month It’s Been For Mazarrón Bowls Club!
Champion of Champion

Some of our Club Champions had the opportunity to go forward and play in the LLB Champion of Champions held at San Miguel Bowling Club, Torrevieja. This competition lasts a week or in this year’s case, two weeks, due to all the rain during the Easter period. Up to twenty clubs saw their champions take part in seven disciplines. MBC entered into five of the disciplines: Men’s and Ladies’ Singles, Men’s, Ladies’ and Mixed Pairs.

As each club were fielding their best players, it was very difficult to win even one game. For MBC, Jim Coughlan played in the Men’s Singles, and Helen Chambers played in the Ladies’ Singles. They both won their first rounds, but both lost in the quarter-finals. Mike and Helen Chambers entered the Mixed Pairs, but lost in the first round. Colin Appleton and Alan Benton played in Men’s Pairs and got to the semi-finals, but sadly lost that game. Gillian Morris and Helen Chambers played in the Ladies’ Pairs after four tough games and needing to play a nineteenth end in the final, they won! What a fantastic achievement for themselves and the club.
Richard Cooper Trophy

On 5th May the annual Richard Cooper Trophy was played. Richard was a hard working committee member of MBC, and a competitive player, who sadly died four years ago. Colin Appleton, MBC Competition Secretary organised a two wood triples competition in Richards name. The winning team was Harry Male, Barbara Benton and Mandy Wright. Using the name of the competition ‘Cooper’ as a theme, their prize was a barrel money box each. Runners-up were Doug Macfarlane, Bill Haining and Tom Percy. Wooden spoons that would have been made from the left-over wood from the barrel making went to the team that came last! That team was Captain Jim, Gillian Morris and Gill Appleton. A great day was had by all, the weather being perfect and raising 32.50€ for the MABS Fund.
To start the day off and for a bit of fun, a Spider Drive was played with a bottle of brandy as a prize, which Barbara Tottey won.
The MABS Fund has been boosted by several euros due to many wrong bias being delivered since April!
Spanish Nationals
The Spanish Nationals started on May 10th with an opening ceremony, but as the games were in progress after the closing date for June’s publication, a report on how Captain Jim Coughlan and Billy Faulkner do will be in the July issue of the Costa Cálida Chronicle.
Socially
Members of MBC were recently invited to join Camposol Golf Association for their Quiz Night. Three teams joined in and enjoyed a good evening without winning this time, but contributed to 800€ being raised for three charities. In addition, some members joined in with the CGA May Ball Dinner and Dance.
MBC looks forward to welcoming new players on Tuesday and Thursday ‘Roll-ups’. Colin has all the information and can be contacted on 605 492 937 or look on the MBC website
