Summer’s Arrived

Now that the Summer is here Mazarrón Bowls Club’s diary is not so busy. We have not entered into the LLB Summer League this year so that travelling up the coast to distant venues has gone quiet. In May The Spanish National Championships were held and there was a club competition in addition to the usual weekly roll-ups.

Held over two weeks in May, Billy Faulkner and Jim Coughlan competed in the Men’s Singles at Emerald Isle BC and Greenland BC up at Torrevieja. A different format of play was used this year. The Round Robin consisted of eight groups of 4/5 entrants who had to play each member in their group. After the scores, 2 for a win, one for a draw were added up and the top scorer from each group went through to the quarter finals, semi-finals and finals. Unfortunately Billy and Jim were unlucky this year, but well done for the endeavour in representing the Club.

On May 30th Mazarrón BC held the annual Captain v President’s Trophy. With seven matches between the teams to decide the outcome, the Captain’s team came out on top, winning eight points to the President’s six. The weather was perfect; not too hot and not too windy!

Captain Jim Coughlan and his winning team were presented with the trophy along with a token gift. In keeping with our Competition Secretary’s idea of prizes relating to the competition, Captain Jim received a small bottle of Captain Morgan spiced rum while President Mark Bettcher earned a wedge of President’s Brie cheese – maybe a ‘hard cheese’ would have been even more appropriate! These added to the fun of a friendly match!

The club’s latest competition was played on 30th June so the results of the John Smith Trophy will be in next month’s Costa Cálida Chronicle.

Hotshot

Gillian Morris and Helen Chambers with their Hotshot certificates

A hotshot is where a team scores maximum shots on one end. In Pairs it is awarded for the maximum eight shots scored in one end, Triples nine and Rinks eight. Gillian Morris and Helen Chambers have now received their internationally recognised certificates for scoring eight points on one end in Ladies’ Pairs when they played their winning match in the Mazarrón Bowls Club Championship Finals back in March. Congratulations ladies!

During the hot summer months, Mazarrón BC have less competitive games, but enjoy friendly roll-ups and a cool drink in the shade afterwards. These roll ups on Tuesdays and Thursdays are now being played in the cooler evenings starting at 6pm for 6.30pm to play and are restricted to 14 ends to leave time afterwards for socializing over a drink among members and their families at The Sport Bar on site at Hacienda Del Alamo. We look forward to welcoming new visitors on these evenings whether already experienced bowlers, or those wishing to give bowls a try. Bowls are available for use and the only requirements is for flat soled shoes.
