The New Year has arrived!

It’s great to get back bowling and meeting up with fellow bowlers, most having not played for a long time due to being unable to travel across the municipal border to get to our home rink on Hacienda Del Alamo.

The Club Winter Triples and the new Pairs Set Leagues has been cancelled, but the Club Championships rounds are underway, with games already played or some booked to be played before Christmas, making the rinks busy again.  Our roll-ups are popular so we are having to use a booking system as we are only allowed 25 people within the rink enclosure. Before entering everyone has to be temperature tested and signed in, along with sanitizing all the equipment used and face masks must be worn at all times.

Generally my report talks of men doing well within the club, but this month I am congratulating Gill Appleton on being 2020’s “Most improved Player” of Mazarrón Bowls Club.  Gill was awarded this trophy at our Club Championships presentation in October.

Gill has been bowling for less than three years. Her husband Colin was already a member and Gill said numerous times that she wasn’t interested in bowling and enjoyed going to her craft groups twice a week and knitting and cross stitch at home.  Eventually Gill requested to try bowling. After a couple of practise sessions on the rink she decided that whilst she was back in England for a holiday, she would buy everything that she needed to be able to play bowls. After getting back home to Camposol, Gill was up the rink as often as possible; not bad for someone who claimed not to be sporty or competitive! She soon became a player in the LLB Monday League team, then last season she joined the Friday team as well.

Gill still goes to her craft groups, so always has something in the making. Added to this, Gill is now Competition Secretary’s secretary doing a lot of behind the scenes work on the computer to help Colin with the running of competitions.

MABS, the charity that Mazarrón Bowls Club supports would appreciate anything that they can sell in their shop at Totana to help support the running of the Respite Centre on Camposol B, so when you are having a clear out for a fresh start to 2021, please drop off your donations.  Telephone 634 313 478
