Off To A Good Start

New Year’s Day 2019

Christmas and New Year together create a pause in both league and competition schedules; an interval to enjoy casual bowling among friends, to complete outstanding Club Championship matches in the lead up to the finals weekend in March and to reflect generally how we are doing both introspectively and also in our standing with other Clubs in the region.

Winners against La Siesta – Alan Benton, Andrew Bunce, Jim Coughlan.

In looking at ourselves what better than to see how the Club Championships have progressed in 11 categories. All the finalists have now come through to compete in the Finals Weekend in early March. They say that ‘the cream always comes to the top’ and it seems that way at first glance with former champions and former finalists reappearing in most categories. However, we will see some new finalists – Clive Hoyal and Frank Quinton will compete for the President’s Open; first time appearance by Jim Coughlan in the Men’s Singles against past multi-finalist but not Champion Alan Benton; rooky (but-not-now) new bowler Kerry Henry challenging in the Ladies’ Pairs and new finalists Don Henry, Frank Quinton and Brian Bunce in the Men’s Triples. The recurrent comment in this season’s Championships has been “There are no easy matches anymore!” The standard throughout has been exceptional.

Winners at San Luis – Doug Macfarlane, Alan Benton, Mike Chambers.

The standard is also reflected by the high standard of competition in the domestic Triples League. In January, with only the last three of 9 matches to be played, the top nine teams are separated by only 5 points. After the break for the Festive Season ‘Kerry’s Heroes’; Kerry Henry/Colin Appleton/Alan Benton dislodged ‘WAM’ from the top spot, but are still only one point clear of the following pack of three. It will be cut-throat to see who takes the Trophy.

In the inter-club LLB leagues, the second half of the season has started well for both teams. With two matches now played, the Monday ‘Mariners’ team has dominated with successive wins; firstly against Quesada Rubies 12-0 and then against Vistabella Eagles 8-4. After disappointing outcomes just before Christmas these results have lifted Mazarrón Mariners back to mid-table and keen to advance from there.

The Friday ‘Miners’ team has dominated in their Southern League since the beginning of the season and have held the top spot from the start. With the restart into the second half of the season, the team has resumed its commanding performance by overcoming San Luis Leopards away from home by 8 points to 2 and thereby maintaining a 12 point lead over second placed Quesada Swifts.
