Lions In the community – Australian Bushfires
When an area the size of Belgium is ablaze, you have a MAJOR natural disaster, but also an even bigger human disaster of quite unimaginable dimensions. Lion’s volunteers in Australia are on the ground distributing support on a daily basis, but they need both National and International Help!
As indicated on all Lions fund raising events, every 1£/€1 that is donated is spent on the purpose it is raised for. NO-ONE gets paid in Lions. All funds are channelled to local Lions Clubs who are then able to manage how the money is spent and where, to provide the best for those affected.
People local to Mazarrón may remember this similar process when Mazarrón Lions Club, being the nearest club to Lorca and its serious unexpected Earthquake, were charged with managing all donations made by Lions Clubs world-wide and the local population and yes, we had donations from Lions Clubs in Australia who are twinned with clubs in the UK and could read the press coverage of the event from their associate club.
Since the Lions Clubs Australia National Bushfire Appeal was established in October 2019, Australian Lions Foundation has received over $600,000 worth of donations from Lions, businesses and individuals right across Australia. In addition, an initial emergency donation from Lions International Foundation Funds in USA of €200,000 was committed. LCIF mobilises quickly to support Lions Clubs in major disasters all over the world. With the assistance of these funds, Lions Clubs in the affected areas all over Australia have been able to purchase locally the shopping vouchers, food, water and supplies so urgently required by those residents in need. Lions Clubs in Northern NSW have been using Australian Lions Foundation funding to purchase, install and fill water tanks for local residents who have lost their water sources in the bushfires.
In the Bega Valley area NSW, this January 2020, Lions, in partnership with the local Emergency charities, have distributed over 15,000 meals.
Where there’s a need, there’s a Lion.
