MABS….Who?
Even after 20 years of supporting patients diagnosed with Cancer and their families, there are still people out there that do not know what we do.
MABS (Marina Alta Breast Cancer Support) was created over 20 years ago from the need of women having gone through the trauma of being diagnosed with breast cancer or gone through surgery & having nowhere to turn to for support. MABS was created by ladies who had gone through this and wanted to help & support others who found themselves in the same position. Often people move to Spain for ‘a better lifestyle’ which is great when things are going well BUT not so great if you find yourself with medical problems, not speaking the language and many having no family network locally to help.
Once MABS was up and running helping other ladies with breast cancer, by driving them to hospital appointments, translating for them or just to be there to talk to it snowballed…
The medical profession was quick to see that MABS were a big help to these ladies, so they started to refer others with various types of cancer and MABS grew larger with some patients becoming volunteers and sharing their experiences.
MABS has now been given foundation status, which gives us some tax benefits, which in turn allows us to expand our area & services we provide, including our respite & hospice home in Camposol. We have charity shops, market stalls, fundraising events and donations from patients and sponsors who admire the work we carry out for the benefit of our patients no matter their nationality. We receive no government funding, so money from our charity shops & stalls are very important to the continued success of MABS to provide our much-needed services.
Our motto has remained the same; “To care, comfort and counsel people affected by cancer.”
