Overcast skies and early morning rain appeared with the dawn on Monday 10th May, but that did not dissuade Los Amigos Golf Society from venturing out for their May competition at La Serena Golf Course. En-route to the venue, the skies cleared and the sun emerged. To make things a little more interesting, the wind also arrived and stayed with us for most of the day. The format for the competition was an Individual Stableford and, with the course in very good condition, it bode well for a good day’s golf.
Most of us had visited La Serena previously, but for some, it was their first visit. However, due to the numerous lakes (16) and the vagaries of the wind, it was certainly going to be a thought-provoking if not successful day out. The big hitters made some of the water hazards look easy, but for others, it was amazing how much effect the wind had on what initially looked like a good drive. Even though the ‘Barnes Wallis’ effect was applied, there was no advantage gained and the ball stayed in the water.

At this juncture, we would like to take this opportunity of saying welcome aboard to two new members, John Salter and John Price. Though most of us succumbed to the windy conditions, one man made the most of it and finished streets ahead of everyone else, so here are the results:
1st place: with 36 points, Dave Lynch.
2nd place: with 27 points, Eddie Harrison.
3rd place: with 26 points, Brian Tape.
Nearest the Pin results are as follows:
Hole 9: at 6.65 metres, John Price.
The wind was certainly in control on most fairways, especially the PAR 3’s: resulting in several near misses, with only one green being reached, but overall an enjoyable day out was had by all.
