After a few hectic and worrying days when it appeared that Mazarrón FC may go out of existence, the future of the Club was finally secured just in time to register with the Murcia Federation before the 30th July deadline.
President Diego Arango, who was part of the consortium which took over the club at the start of last season, is now in sole charge at the Estadio Municipal Pedro Mendez and has worked tirelessly to assemble a new squad despite all the problems which occurred behind the scenes. A Colombian by birth, he has brought in a number of players who were born in his country, including last year’s captain Taborda who has signed for another season.
The squad also includes a number of local born players, including goalkeeper Pablo Lopez, a Spanish Beach Soccer international, and Jose Oliver and Antonio Andreo who both graduated through the junior ranks at Mazarrón. They both played in the first team before leaving for pastures new, but have now returned to help the club regain its place in the Tercera Division. English born Aaron Fothergill, who was with the club last season, has also re-joined. Other new signings at the time of going to press include central defender Lopez who was one of the players for whom international clearance was not obtained in time for him to play last season, winger Alvaro Vera (24), Argentinian striker Lucas Gonzalez (20), midfielders Dany Caicedo (23) and Juan David (22) and striker Carlitos Rivas (27).
There is a good blend of youth and experience for new Manager Paco Luna to work with. He is a high-profile manager who is an experienced former professional footballer. 50 years old, he played over 400 first class games, scoring more than 100 goals, with spells in Scotland with Hibernian and Dundee. Indeed, he is something of a legend in Hibernian after scoring twice in a UEFA Cup game against AEK Athens. Paco arrived in Mazarrón in time for the first pre-season friendly against Alcantarilla at the Estadio Municipal which Mazarrón won 2-1. At the time of going to press they have played three friendly games winning two and losing one; the return game against Alcantarilla which they lost 4-2. The other game was a 2-0 victory over near-neighbours EF Alhama.
At the time of writing the fixture list for the 2022/23 season has not yet been released and we are still awaiting details of season ticket and match day prices from the Club. When the season does start, Mazarrón’s home games are normally played on Sundays with varying kick off times. Kick off times are not normally known until the Tuesday before the day of the game. Full details of all games are advertised in the local media, on fb.me/mazarron2016 and on posters at various points throughout Camposol and Mazarrón.
