Mazarrón team v CD Plus Ultra
Mazarrón team v CD Plus Ultra

Mazarrón FC continued their excellent 2019 form with a 2-0 win away to CD Plus Ultra in the first game of 2020. With five wins and a draw from the last six games, Mazarrón cemented their place in the play-off positions in 4th place, just a point behind 3rd placed Real Murcia and four points adrift from Mar Menor and Lorca Deportiva who were first and second respectively.

The last game before Christmas was a hard fought goalless draw at home to play-off rivals Atletico Pulpileno. It was a scrappy game on a hard and bumpy surface which made good football very difficult. It was a game which Mazarrón could not afford to lose and a draw was a fair result and kept Pulpileno two points behind Mazarrón in the league table.

Lorca FC, who were among the forerunners earlier in the season have slipped away badly and, at the time of writing, were nine points behind Mazarrón in 7th place with UCAM Murcia four points behind Mazarrón in 6th.

Celebrating the win over Plus Ultra

Mazarrón’s defence, which had conceded too many goals in the first part of the season, has tightened up considerably, keeping three clean sheets in succession and should be further improved by the return of captain Adrian Campoy. He made his first appearance of the season following a serious injury in the last five minutes of the win at Plus Ultra and will strengthen the competition for places in the centre of defence. Left winger Salva Ballesta made a welcome return to Mazarrón after starting the season at Aguilas. He made his debut in the win at Plus Ultra and scored the second goal. He was our joint leading scorer last season with nine goals and his introduction into the squad will certainly boost our hopes of a playoff position at the end of the season.

Los Amigos de Mazarrón FC organise a supporters’ coach to most away games at €10 for members & non-members €12. Support for the coach has dwindled somewhat recently, mainly due to early morning kick offs and a car share system has been in operation. Full details of all games, are advertised in the local media, www.mazarronfc.es, Facebook fb.me/mazarron2016 and on posters throughout Camposol and Mazarrón.
