The publication of the fixture list in the Preferente Autonomica for the 2022/23 season brought about new hopes and expectations for Mazarrón FC. After relegation from the Tercera Division last season, it is vital that the Club makes a quick return to that league. Although it is not going to be easy, the work done behind the scenes by President Diego Arango should be appreciated in assembling a new squad which, on paper at least, seems more than capable of achieving this aim.

New Manager Paco Luna has settled in quickly and moved into the area with his family. Judging by the pre-season games his style of football is very pleasing to watch with quick two-touch football wherever possible. It is also pleasing to see that he does not bring all the players back to defend corners and free kicks, always leaving two or three players up to help with a quick breakaway. There is a good blend of youth and experience with a number of South American born players in the squad, together with players who have come through the junior ranks at Mazarrón like Adrian Silva, Aaron Fothergill, Jose Oliver and Antonio Andreo who has lots of experience at Mazarrón FC previously and now re-joins the Club. In addition, it is hoped that local Spanish Beach Soccer Internationals Chiky Ardil and David Ardil will join the squad when their beach soccer commitments allow.

Ten games were played in pre-season and only two were lost, both against teams in the Tercera Division; Alcantarilla and Atletico Pulpileno who were relegated from the Segunda Division last season. Two pre-season trophies were won and 28 goals were scored with 11 against. Central defenders Lopez and Dany Caicedo were impressive and up-front Chico Rubio, Alvaro Vega and the speedy Carlos Rivas showed that they know where the net is. Captain Taborda and Andreo are strong and dominant in midfield and, although pre-season games are hard to form an opinion on, there are definite signs of good things to come.

Los Amigos aims to take a supporters’ coach to away games subject to demand. The coach leaves from Camposol B lower car park opposite Consum. We travelled to the first away game at Aguilas on 17th September. The coach fare at present is €10 for members and €12 for non-members. If we do not have sufficient numbers to justify the coach, or if the game is played fairly locally, we travel in convoy in cars. We ask everyone to email janperks1@gmail.com to indicate that they wish to travel on the coach well in advance of each away game. Payment can be made at our Thursday meetings.

Memberships were due on 1st August and last for twelve months. Membership is €20 and members and a partner are entitled to discount on coach travel to away games and to all Los Amigos social activities. The only stipulation is that members only are allowed to attend the monthly business meetings. Membership forms are available at our weekly meetings or you can email our Membership Secretary, Russ McMillan for a form at8254981@gmail.com

Members and friends enjoyed another successful evening at Bar Velasco on Friday 16th September with an excellent meal with wine, beer and soft drinks included, before entertainment with the talented vocalist Rees. A coach was provided which was much appreciated in view of the amounts of alcohol consumed!!!

Our President’s Ball which was due to take place at The Club House, Camposol C on Friday 14th October has unfortunately been cancelled. Those people who had bought tickets in advance can obtain a refund at any of our weekly meetings, which have now resumed after the summer break every Thursday at Mariano’s Bar & Restaurant, Camposol A at 4pm. All are welcome except for at the monthly Business Meeting on the last Thursday in each month which is open to members only.
