Mazarrón FC’s tremendous efforts in the second half of the season were not quite enough to avoid relegation to the Preferente Autonomica. With only two points obtained from the first eleven games of the season it was always going to be an almost impossible task, but the introduction of a new manager and some more experienced players came so close to avoiding the drop. In the end, the team finished just three points from safety after being nine points adrift with five games remaining. Defeat to UCAM Murcia in the penultimate game of the season and the last game at home confirmed relegation, but the team still went on to win 1-0 at Huercal-Overa in the final match to end the season on a positive note.
Dominican Republic International Carlos Ventura was the leading scorer and deservedly won the Los Amigos de Mazarrón FC Player of the Year Award which was presented to him at the last home game of the season.
The new President of the Football Club, Diego, met with representatives of the Los Amigos Executive Committee just before the end of the season to outline his plans for next season whichever league the club found itself. He felt that the board’s ambition in bringing in a number of foreign players at the start of the season had backfired somewhat, but was pleased with how the players had responded in recent weeks. He felt that next season, especially if we were relegated, the way forward was to utilise more players from the local area, with a blend of youth and experience and it was good to learn that the new directors had no intention of leaving the club and were formulating a 3-4 year plan for the future. He said that he really appreciated the fantastic support at both home and away games from both Los Amigos and the Redboys Spanish supporters’ group and hoped to forge even closer links in the future.
For the away game at Caravaca on 17th April, almost 40 Los Amigos members and friends travelled by coach to watch the game and enjoy a meal at the Hotel Argos in Calasparra. With an early kick-off, the meal was arranged for after the game and it was a superb offering with lots of wine and beer to accompany it, so much so that it was difficult to get everyone back on the coach as they were enjoying themselves so much despite the fact that Mazarrón had been beaten 2-0.
At the last home game of the season against UCAM Murcia on 24th April a meal was arranged before the game at La Sienna Bar and Restaurant opposite the football ground. The game was designated as a ‘football shirt’ day so you could wear the shirt of your favourite club (including Mazarrón’s). The new President Diego joined Los Amigos members for lunch and had a chance to speak with many of those present. Again, there was a pleasant meal with wine and beer aplenty, but the afternoon was spoiled again by a 1-0 defeat which confirmed Mazarron’s relegation.

On Sunday 8th May, after the end of the season, a game was played between a combined Los Amigos and Camposol Walking Football Group team and the Red Boys. The game was played at the Estadio Municipal and was won 3-2 by the Red Boys. It is hoped to make this an annual event, so thanks to Mazarrón FC for the use of the facilities.
The last Los Amigos Members’ meeting of the season was held on 26th May. Meetings are normally suspended during the summer months, although some members continue to meet on an informal basis on a Thursday afternoon. Details of where these informal meetings will be held will be outlined on Facebook fb.me/mazarron2016. This page will also keep members and supporters updated throughout the closed season with news of new signings, pre-season games, next year’s season ticket prices and the fixtures for next season when they become available.
May we take this opportunity of thanking all our members and friends and all supporters of Mazarrón FC for their support in what has been a difficult, but still, in the main, enjoyable season.
