Preparations for the 2019/20 season are well under way at Mazarrón FC as the club prepares for their second season back in the Tercera Division.
After promotion from the Preferente Autonomica via the play-offs in the 2017/18 season, Mazarrón finished in a very respectable 10th position, the highest of the four promoted clubs, under the stewardship of manager Juanjo. It was his first experience as a manager at this level and, although he did attract some criticism for one or two of his decisions, he did a remarkable job in consolidating Mazarrón’s position with the lowest budget in the league.
Work is progressing on improving the state of the pitch at the Estadio Municipal Pedro Mendez Mendez which has not been the best in recent years and some of Mazarrón’s best performances have been away from home. The squad for the new season is beginning to take shape, with fourteen players recruited at the time of writing, with more expected when training resumes in mid-July. There seems a healthy mix of new players with a number of old favourites signing again for the forthcoming season.

One notable absence will be popular goalkeeper Antonio Pena, the Los Amigos de Mazarrón FC Player of the Year. Pena was the first player to announce that he was re-signing for the new season, but later said that he had changed his mind; a decision which upset the Mazarrón hierarchy who had taken him at his word. They moved quickly to sign a replacement goalkeeper Francisco Andugar from Lorca FC to compete with another new signing Pablo Lopez for the goalkeeper’s jersey. Pablo came through the ranks of the Mazarrón Junior Team before leaving to join the Spain Under 21 Beach Soccer team from which he progressed to the senior team and won a silver medal at the 2019 European Games in Minsk, Belarus in June. After winning their group and beating Switzerland in the semi-final, Spain lost out to Portugal in the final. Another member of the silver medal winning squad, David Ardil, also a Mazarrón lad, has signed for the club for the forthcoming season. He played for Cartagena FC in the Tercera Division last season and is a versatile defender. Other new signings include the welcome return of Dani Morales from EDMF Churra Gesa. Dani was our leading scorer in the 2017-18 promotion season and was Churra’s top scorer last season as they reached the Tercera Division Play-Offs.

Monas, a young attacking player has joined from Racing Murcia for whom he scored 14 goals last season and experienced midfielder Asensio joins from Huercal-Overa. He is 24 and has played all his football at Tercera level or higher. Captain Adrian Campoy will be starting his third season at Mazarrón and will be joined by other members of last season’s squad including, Nacho, Josema, Andreo, Xavi, Jose Da and Diego. Players leaving the club at the time of writing are Pena and Salva Ballesta who is joining Aguilas FC.

On Friday 28th June 55 Los Amigos members and friends had a great afternoon at the Meson Los Ortigas (Lamb Chop) in Totana to enjoy their delicious suckling pig feast and traditional lamb chops. A great time was had by all and, suffice to say, the restaurant almost ran out of drinks!!
On Wednesday 3rd July our President Alan Lyle and his wife Sue hosted their annual BBQ and Quiz. The food was superb as usual and the excellent quiz was presented by Bryan Wilde. Around €290 was raised on the night. Many thanks to Alan and Sue for their hard work.
