We can sympathise with performers who have not been able to work due to the closure of theatres and concert halls. Not only have they not been able to earn a living, but their greatest sadness must be that they have not been able to do something they enjoy doing. The members of the Harlequin Rock Choir feel the same. We have missed the thrill of singing in front of an audience. We are sad too that we haven’t been able to help raise much needed funds for our local charities.
Like many other choirs around the world, we have not been idle. Our brilliant Musical Directors Andy Hurrell and Ann Thompson have been working hard throughout this awful time and have done their best to get us together for practices whenever possible. Due to the closure of the Social Centre on Camposol B, our usual practice venue, we are thankful to the generosity of Camposol Golf Club for providing us with a venue for our practices, strictly following the rules and regulations in place at the time. Of course restrictions have been changing constantly and we made sure that we adhered to them.
In a normal year we find and record new songs to add to our repertoire. Unbelievably, we have not missed out this time. Ann and Andy presented us with five new songs and sent us teach tracks which we rehearsed individually as we usually do. We then got together for rehearsals in small groups, adhering to the restrictions of course. When we were happy with the sound we produced for each of the songs, we recorded them. With the magic of technology our Musical Directors were able to put the small group recordings together. No-one would believe that these recordings were made by small groups of people socially distanced and wearing masks!
We are so pleased with our recordings that we asked Costa Cálida Radio to play a couple of them – our version of two songs by Ellie Goulding, Love Me Like You Do and In This Together. We hope you heard them and enjoyed them.
Let’s hope that soon we can thrill ourselves and you when we sing these songs live and continue to help the local charities.
