Scientific study concludes simple 10min breathing “trick” can reverse inflammatory conditions as well as super boosting immune system!
With the BBC, ITV and other TV stations now reporting on this Guinness world record holders protocol, it seems there is no stopping the huge interest in this simple approach to better health.
This year (2022) the BBC will air a new reality game show “Wim Hof’s Superstar Survival” and the celebrities taking part will be given coaching to achieve the same world record parameters as the “Ice Man” himself has done together with his students. The show will be hosted by Lee Mac and Holly Willoughby
When he appeared on ITV’S This Morning with Philip Schofield and Holly Willoughby they were both left astonished at, after trying the simple 5 minute breathing technique, how good they both felt. They reported a sense of calm and a “high” that normally is only experienced with copious amounts of alcohol!
His approach has won the affirmation of superstars too, with Tom Cruise, Gwyneth Paltrow and tennis legend Novak Djokovic adding to his growing CV of successes.
To break these world records Wim Hof …AKA “The Ice Man” sat for two hours in a bath of ice cubes, swum under ice for 50 meters, was injected with an E.coli endotoxin with no side effects, before climbing mount Everest in nothing but shorts and shoes. Hof states that anyone can learn the breathing techniques to control their immune system.
Can medical science actually support these promising claims, such as being less susceptible to disease? What are the medical effects of the Wim Hof Method – special breathing techniques on the immune system?
After his wife jumped from an 8 storey building in 1996, Wim Hof (after his heart was broken) discovered not just the way to reverse his own grief, but has demonstrated to scientists under strict double blind trials, that anyone can duplicate his approach which he claims can beat any disease. The resulting supercharged immune function can, he claims, reverse heart conditions, and protect you against life threatening disease such as inflammation (the root cause of most diseases) by changing our PH level from acid to alkaline.
The fundamentals of Hof’s approach is simple. A 10 min breathing exercise whilst lying down in bed. This is the kind of protocol I like VERY MUCH! He says this alone is incredibly powerful and as the scientific studies reveal, are backed up in the trials.
Anyone who has done Yoga, Thai Chi or meditation techniques can attest to lower stress levels. Most of us already appreciate the importance of reducing stress, improving sleep, and taking exercise, however being motivated to gleefully jump into a bath of ice cubes for 2 hours could be a big ask for most of us.
Hof has taken his own experimentation and his teachings to willing participants who have all been able to duplicate his own feats of endurance at various levels. But the breathing technique he teaches is fundamental. This sets up the physiology to endure the astonishing feats and world records he has broken in feats of endurance.
What can we do at home to plug into this incredibly powerful approach to healing and health?

The tingling sensation and head rush I felt was almost like being “high” (very enjoyable), there then followed an extraordinarily good night’s sleep and waking feeling really rested. The breathing almost instantly re balances our metabolism back to an alkaline (not acid) state which is normal when we have proper oxygen supplies.
Why does this simple technique work so rapidly?
The amount of oxygen that we inhale through our breathing, influences the amount of energy that is released into our body cells. On a molecular level, this progresses via various chemical and physiological processes. Breathing is the easiest and most instrumental part of the autonomic nervous system to control and navigate. In fact, the way you breathe strongly affects the chemical and physiological activities in your body.
Throughout the years, Wim Hof has developed special breathing exertions that keep his body in optimal condition and in complete control in the most extreme conditions. The breathing technique is first and foremost premised on inhaling deeply and exhaling without any use of force!
TRY IT OUT! For those of us eager to try this simple routine to improve mood and immune function as well as energy levels then follow the steps below as seen on the Wim Hof website.
Everyone can do this! Just follow the steps below. We recommend practicing right after waking, or before a meal, when your stomach is still empty. Note that WHM breathing can affect motor control and, in rare cases, lead to a temporary loss of consciousness. Always sit or lie down before practicing the techniques. Never practice while piloting a vehicle, or in or near bodies of water.
Step 1: Get Comfortable
Assume a meditation posture: sitting, lying down — whichever is most comfortable for you. Make sure you can expand your lungs freely without feeling any constriction.
Step 2: 25 TO 35 Deep Breaths
Close your eyes and try to clear your mind. Be conscious of your breath, and try to fully connect with it. Inhale deeply through the nose or mouth, and exhale unforced through the mouth. Fully inhale through the belly, then chest and then let go unforced. Repeat this 30 to 40 times in short, powerful bursts. You may experience light-headedness, and tingling sensations in your fingers and feet. These side effects are completely harmless.
Step 3: The Hold
After the last exhalation of around 30 deep breaths, inhale one final time, as deeply as you can. Then let the air out and stop breathing. Hold until you feel the urge to breathe again. You should be able to manage at least 30 seconds on this first round of breathing. But if you feel the need to breath before that then of course take the recovery breath.
Step 4: Recovery Breath
When you feel the urge to breathe again, draw one big breath to fill your lungs. Feel your belly and chest expanding. When you are at full capacity, hold the breath for around 15 seconds, then let go. That completes round number one.
Repeat the above cycle another 2 or 3 times. However you will notice on the second round that you are able to hold for around double that of the 1st round!
Repeat the cycle again and this time the hold will be extended to around 90 seconds or more.
This cycle can be repeated 3-4 times without interval. After having completed the breathing exercise, take your time to bask in the bliss. This calm state is highly conducive to meditation — don’t hesitate to combine the two. What amazed me is that after doing this several times I was able to hold the exhale breath on the final cycle for a full 2 minutes before needing to breathe again, indicating a total transformation of oxygenation within the body while lowering blood pressure and stress (cortisol) levels. Previously I could usually manage around 40 seconds before needing to breathe again.
