The Cycling Tour of the Region of Murcia arrives in Mazarrón, as the General Director of the Tour, Francisco Guzmán, has declared: “The cycling tour of Mazarrón returns to its origins, the Cycling Tour of the Region of Murcia has always had a special link with the Municipality of Mazarrón, from here very important stages have been born”.
Gaspar Miras, Mayor of Mazarrón, Francisco José García Ortega, Councillor for Sports, and Francisco Guzmán, General Director of the Vuelta, attended this presentation ceremony.

After the intervention of the Director of the Vuelta, Gaspar Miras, the Mayor of Mazarrón said he is grateful that the Vuelta Ciclista a Murcia passes through the municipality of Mazarrón and offered to collaborate with the organization for future editions. “We make ourselves available to the organizers in order to be more ambitious and for the race to have more stages again”.

He then ended the press conference commenting: “Being able to enjoy seeing the Cycling Carousel of the Cycling Tour of the Region of Murcia is great, it has been years since we could enjoy this race in Mazarrón and it is a pleasure to be able to include this year with a Meta Volante so that neighbours and visitors can see it”.

Regarding the Cycling Tour of the Region of Murcia: Guzmán referred to the participating teams. He announced the participation of 21 teams. Among them, there are 7 UCI World Team teams, the highest category of international cycling. Movistar Team, Astana Qazaqstan, UAE Team Emirates, Bora-Hansgrohe, Cofidis, Intermarché-Wanty and Education First Departamento de Prensa de la Vuelta a Murcia,  +34 679-58-81-60 prensa@vueltamurcia.es are the teams in one category which has more and more representation in the race. The town of Mazarrón will be located in the second flat section of the route, which will begin at the Totana exit and with a 9-kilometer straight through terrain that is very exposed to the wind. After passing El Paretón, the road will begin to slope downwards, and there will even be a section of motorway, so the approach speed to Mazarrón will be very high. The Head of the Race is expected to enter the town at a quarter to four in the afternoon (3:45 p.m.).

This will be the first time that the race passes through this town since it hosted the start in 2015. That year, the first kilometers were identical to those that will be key in the race this year. On this occasion, Avenida Constitución, the main street, will host the second Meta Volante of the day. After leaving Mazarrón, they will enter the road that joins this town and Puerto de Mazarrón. It will be here when the approach to Alto del Cedacero begins, along the coast and Isla Plana. Here, the race can again be affected by the wind. The Isla Plana pass is a leg-breaking and technical stage. The participation of the race continues to grow. All the Spanish teams will be in Fortuna on February 12 to start the race. Movistar Team (UCI World Team) and Euskaltel Euskadi, current defending champions, Caja Rural, Kern Pharma and Burgos BH (UCI Pro Teams) will be joined by the recently created Manuela Fundación (UCI Continental Team).

The participation of professional cyclists from Murcia has also been confirmed. Alejandro Valverde will seek his sixth victory in a race to which he will say goodbye after almost a fortnight of participations. It will be a crown that he will have to snatch from Antonio Jesús Soto. After several years of absence, Rubén Fernández will return to lead Cofidis in his homeland. His countryman Miguel Ángel Ballesteros will seek to repeat his performance from last year. And this year he will do it with another Murcian next to him. José María García debuts this year in professional cycling, and also in the Vuelta Ciclista a la Región de Murcia. The race will once again be the best possible showcase for the lands of the Region. Thanks to Eurosport, the “House of Cycling”, they will reach 153 million homes around the world, and hundreds of millions will be able to get to know our land in up to 21 different languages.
