Cartagena is a seaport in the southeast of the Costa Cálida. It is a walled town and has a fine port which is still a major naval seaport of Spain with a large naval shipyard. Cartagena was founded in about 230BC by the Cartagenians. There has been a lot of development in Cartagena over recent years, including a marina and restaurants along the seafront. There is a wealth of archaeological treasures, including a recently discovered Roman theatre. Various large shops have opened in Cartagena including El Cortes Ingles and as most of these are just out of the main town, it has left the more traditional and historic areas untouched.
