AAR has been in operation for 12 years, helping abused, abandoned and injured donkeys and equines that no longer have their usefulness with the advent of modern machinery and technology.
AAR are so proud of what we have achieved and our work continues with the rescue of a pony and donkey from the perrera last month, an emergency call out to a fatally ill horse and of course our onward care of dogs and other small animals. Over the years we have helped and rehomed: sheep, pigs, hedgehogs, rabbits, parrots and goats.
Andrea’s Animal Rescue was started in August 2008 primarily to care for mal-treated donkeys, as during this time, Henrietta, a female donkey who had several tumours was rescued. She was in fact our second rescue, Lola being the first. Lola had not been adequately cared for by her previous Spanish owner. Henrietta was found about 2kms from our home, abandoned by the side of the motorway. Her tumours were so severe that she had to have treatment in a veterinary hospital in Murcia, at an estimated cost of 2500€. We commenced fund-raising and selling unwanted items at local car boot sales which led to the opening of our first shop in Fuente Alamo. However, despite her treatment, Henrietta sadly died. We could not let her passing go unnoticed, so we formed The Henrietta Foundation.
We are now in the process of building a Sanctuary where you will be able to come and visit all our animals. Initially there will be a café and gift shop and in subsequent phases we hope to be able to open a memorial garden, education centre, kennels and a petting area for small animals. This is taking longer than we had hoped, but we are still battling to get procedures passed and have all the correct paperwork in place. We are well on the way and can’t wait for all our animals to be together.
We could not have achieved any of this without you our lovely, loyal supporters, volunteers, and donors. We thank you so much for your continued support. Come and see us in either of our shops in Roldan or Mazarrón Town. We are always looking for volunteers to help out in our shops, just 4 hours a week or more if you wish! No previous experience necessary! The jobs are varied, from cleaning, to pricing, serving, sorting, tidying and interacting with the customers. Our shops are our main source of income and at the moment we cannot open on Saturdays as we do not have enough staff. We are a friendly bunch and want you to come and work with us! It’s a great way to meet new people, practice your Spanish (Spanish is not essential) and help support our charity. Give me a call on 690 906 565.
