Welcome Group
Welcome Group June 2007

Well it took us well over a year to persuade Carlos formerly from ‘2 in Time‘ but now singing under the name of ‘The Soul Family’ to come and provide the entertainment at one of our monthly dances. Carlos along with his two stunning daughters travelled down from Benidorm and provided first class entertainment for our 16th April Dance. As soon as they took to the stage the dance floor was packed with everyone not only dancing but singing along to all the favourite songs from The Four Tops, The Drifters and many popular Motown hits. It was just a shame that after doing their two 45 minute spots they had to dash away as they are contracted 7 nights a week at a cabaret bar in Benidorm and were on at 1 am. Carlos has since spoken to us to say he would like us to pass on his thanks to everyone who came along on the night and made him and his family so very welcome. He has asked if he can come back again, so we are looking at mid–November but will let you know. Also on the evening we had the lovely Kay C, Hailey from ‘Sunset’ and great disco sounds from Mark Ellwood all completing the evening of first class entertainment.

Our first Treasure Hunt took place on Sunday 29 April and we had 93 people taking part, all leaving at various times and going out into the unknown. The afternoon was a great success with the winners being Gloria´s Gladiators (Brian, Chris, Carol, John & Ellen), runners up The Wilde Sears Quartet (Fran, Bob, Bryan & Geraldine) and even the ones coming last, The Not So Rights (Linda, Yvonne, Malcolm & Trevor), in true Welcome fashion, receiving bottles of wine. Everyone agreed it was a great afternoon out, visiting places they had never been to before. We would like to say a big thank you to Jim and Paul for their excellent organisation and to Ronnie & Jackie for providing the food and Jean for helping to serve it at the finishing destination. To everyone who took part, thanks for participating and yes we will do another one later in the year

Our 9th May Dance saw the return of the popular B J Stevens with his Elvis Tribute along with great songs from Billy Fury, Neil Diamond, Gene Pitney to name a few. We certainly liked the new Elvis black outfit which had come from America. We also introduced on this night a new female singer to the Welcome Group by the name of Nikki Miller from Benidorm. Nikki has the most versatile voice being able to cover songs from so many singers and by the reaction we had will certainly be seeing her back again.

The Book/Jigsaw Swap dates for June are Tuesday 12th and 26th at the new time of 10 am to 12 noon. Information on this popular Group can be obtained by contacting Jo on 630 351 509. I know we do say this quite a lot but we are so lucky to have so many fantastic volunteers who not only help with putting out and putting away the books but help during the morning. Thanks also go to Jo who organises everyone and makes sure you all have some refreshments.

Line Dancing which is held at Kennelly’s on Monday and Thursday evenings will be taking a short summer break following the Thursday class on 28th June and re-commencing on Monday 3rd September. We would like to take this opportunity of thanking Ann, Roy and the line dancers for their very kind donation of 600? which they are going to divide between MABS (Cancer Support Group), Shoreless School, Totana and ASPADEM.

The monthly fun petanca takes place on the last Wednesday of each month at the petanca lanes, Mariano’s Restaurant, Camposol. The next one will be Wednesday 27th June at 4pm and all are welcome. Don’t forget the Annual Petanca Competition which is taking place on Sunday 17th June. For details, please contact Colin on 968 199 001.

We had such an overwhelming response when the Ladies’ Day tickets (6th June) went on sale that we have had to find a bigger venue. Mariano’s are very kindly allowing us to use the pool area as the pool will not be opening until after this date. We are contacting everyone that put their name on the waiting list so that we don’t leave any ladies disappointed. So please note ladies, the day is now taking place outside (pool area), Mariano’s Restaurant Camposol. Entrance is strictly by ticket only which has been purchased in advance.

If you are in possession of the Entertainment Programme and were not at the May Meeting, we made an announcement about two date changes that we have, the first one being the Cabaret Night in September which will now be on Monday 24th September and the Jimmy Cricket Show will now be on Tuesday 23rd October.

Our next meeting takes place on Saturday 2nd June at 2pm at Mariano’s Restaurant, Camposol – no membership, everyone welcome. At this meeting we will be taking names for the trip to Valencia (18–20th September) and selling tickets for the 21st July Dance, which will be held outside at the pool area, Mariano’s. We will be seeing the return of the always popular Beagles along with Champagne Sounds and a light supper will be served. Tickets for this dance will be just 10€. If you are unable to make this meeting and wish to purchase tickets, please contact us after 4pm on the day or anytime thereafter. At time of going to press (15th May) we only have 6 tickets left for The Posh Togs Do on Saturday 23rd June. All tickets for the trip to Mini Hollywood on Monday 2nd July have been sold. Don’t forget if you have attended any of our events or want any information on the Group, please view our web site,
