The Cruise Exploits!
What a tale to be told about the Welcome Group Cruise and stop-over in Venice!
After 2 brilliant nights in Venice there were over 3 hours delay in boarding the ship. Over 1000 people not told why! Once on board it was a mad dash for the bars and eating-places.
We visited some lovely places around the Aegean Sea & Greek Islands and met some amazing people. Too much food & drink! Hic!
Come disembarking! We were told we would be docking at 10am instead of 9am making it a bit tight for our 12.15am flight. Then the fog happened and everything stopped moving. 8 hours later we arrive in Venice, get to the airport, hoping for the 7pm flight… No! 7 (yes 7) cruise ships all docking late meant the Venice overnight population grew by 13,000 all looking for flights, hotels etc. Our agent back in Murcia was frantically trying to find rooms for us, which he did – in a hotel 30km outside Venice (a Sheraton hotel). Whatsapp and messenger until 3am to eventually get us all on a flight Sunday evening to Madrid. Brilliant….. Not!
A bus and mini-bus turned up to take us back to the airport in Venice nearly 2 hours late. The luggage wouldn’t all fit in, so a second mini-bus was called to take the excess! 2 mini-buses head off to the airport, but the coach wouldn’t start! The alarm and cut off kicked in every time the ignition was turned on. After 30 minutes trying he eventually called for a replacement which arrived 45 minutes later!
We got to the airport and met the rest of our group like we had been on ‘I’m a Celebrity’ or something. At the ticket office I was told our tickets had been cancelled because they hadn’t been paid for when booked online! I asked if I could re-book us all in on the flight. ‘NO’ was the answer. I wasn’t allowed to buy that many tickets at the airport (I only wanted 69) and all the seats had been sold! I am looking around for the cameras as this had to be ‘You’ve Been Framed’ or ‘The Ant & Dec’s Show’. Sadly no!
After informing everyone that we had no flights back, it looked gloomy. Then one of our couples went to another handling office in the airport, to be told “Yes there are seats available on the flight we had just been told was full – a mad dash to go and purchase tickets, but as each person got to the window of the sales desk, amazingly the cost had gone up by €20/€40/€60pp – from €360 to €680 plus tax. We were not even all on the same flight – some went via Rome, or Zurich and some direct. Thankfully Mateo Coaches had stayed at the airport for us from Saturday evening until the last flight at midnight Sunday.
8 of our group decided to stay in Venice for a night or two, 7 went via the UK, 4 travelled back via train (which were on strike), hired a car to Milan, flight to Madrid, train to Murcia but couldn’t get any further due to train line repairs between Murcia & Totana and Murcia & Cartagena, so a lift from friends back here.
All I kept thinking about was the film Trains, Planes and Automobiles. If anything could have gone wrong it did. I am having reservations about taking a group flying again, but I suppose we say ‘never say never’.
Sorry I wasn’t going to go on about our exploits, But………!
