The Summer Ball held on Wednesday 18 June in the wonderful setting of the Monasterio De Santa Eulalia Hotel, Sierra Espuña. It was such a beautiful evening weather-wise and the scenery quite stunning. We did have a bit of a hic-up with the champagne reception when the coaches arrived but once in the beautifully laid restaurant that was soon forgotten. The service & food were excellent and thanks must certainly go to the Director & staff at the hotel especially Sue, to GLOBOS Balloons (table decorations), Jane Woodward (entertainment) but most of all to everyone that came along and certainly dressed for the occasion. (Photos now on the web site.) We have had many people asking if we are going to hold the ball again next year at this splendid venue and this will be discussed at the September Meeting. An unexpected amount was raised from this night (explained at the July Meeting) so we have made it up to 1,000 euros. A cheque for this amount was presented to MABS which will certainly help in all their soaring costs. (MABS provide a very important & necessary service in this area and have certainly helped & supported many people who have gone through or going through cancer to cope). We feel the donations we give them through the year go some way to helping the community now when it is most needed. Without donations, MABS would certainly not be able to operate in this area.
Our Annual Petanca Competition took place on Wednesday 25 June. Not only did the winners receive prizes, but a great sun tan! Winners of the competition were John & Diane who received the shield & a basket of goodies; runners up were John & Irene. We also had a losers' competition, although we call it the 2nd Division(!), with the final winners being Dave & Maureen, just beating Di & Cath by 1 point. The losers' shield was presented by Biggy Marshall from ASSSA Insurance who are the sponsors of that part of the competition. The afternoon finished off with a light supper of bacon, egg and chips which certainly went down very well with everyone. Thanks to Les for the organisation, Biggy for doing the presentation & to all that took part.
There will be no meeting in August, although we will be at Mariano's Restaurant on Saturday 2nd August between 2 & 3pm when tickets for Halloween Night go on sale. This night will see the return of the popular Degs, Andy, Angie & Marie who provided first class entertainment for us on Valentine's Night. There will be plenty of dance music and a prize for best male & female costume (optional) & light supper provided (14€).
Tickets on sale at time of going to press (15/07) are for 29 September where we see the return of the very popular Soul Family from Benidorm along with Lucinda & disco sounds with Mark. Tickets 10€ (no food). Race Night tickets on sale (2€) taking place on Wednesday 15 October with all proceeds going to MABS. This night will be held in memory of Linda Bell who recently lost her courageous fight against cancer. Our sincere condolences go to Malcolm & family at this very sad time. Linda will certainly be missed by the Welcome Group as she was one of our most loyal & helpful volunteers.
Next Welcome Meeting, Mariano's Restaurant, Camposol, 2pm, Saturday 6 September. Tickets will go on sale from this meeting for our November Dance & Christmas Party Night, details in September issue.
