Well readers, here we are in September and in the middle of all the visitors. We have had a continual stream for August – nice to see them; nice to see them go!!!!!! Also when you are reading this the heat should be going – although there seems to be Spanish rumour of a mega hot September – but the visitors will have returned to Madrid and such places! Again it is nice to see the coastal regions busy and all the bars and restaurants open but it’s also nice to get it back for us residents.
Not so much TV news this month, so this article is going to be fairly short. For those of you who have been following these articles, there is no more real news on the UK terrestrial channels going to the new satellite system – it is planned for spring 2008 so I am sure that definitive news will not be far away. Let’s hope it does not affect our watching down here in southern Spain. Sky HD (high definition) has been a major success – despite my criticism! It is SKY’s fastest selling product ever with 292,000 subscribers since the start of the year. We can supply HD boxes but with no SKY–subsidy in Spain they are not cheap – call for details. It has been announced that Pace are to make HD boxes, whereas up to date only Thompson made them – some competition may bring prices down – watch this space. On the other hand SKY have purchased AMSTRAD and what that means is yet to be seen. Will SKY effectively be making all their own boxes in the future and then setting prices to suit? The deal has been referred to the “office of fair trading” for that very reason, so maybe SKY will be forced to allow other makes to be available for the satellite service. SKY also announced record operating profits – some £958 million – but they have also announced subscription price increases from September 1st! Sport packs go up one pound and full packs up one pound fifty. Other packs rise by similar amounts – so expect your next bank or credit card statement to show the increases if you subscribe. With 8582 million subscribers, a pound increase gives that much extra in the till!!??
That’s about all the news I can find this month so until next it’s just the final word to new property purchasers. If you are buying and want UK TV then get a dish survey first. The large dishes required are not always possible on a property.
