Mazarrón’s 2,700-Year-Old Boat
Historians are trying to decide what to do with a Phoenician boat found off the coast of Mazarrón and have opted to leave it on the sea bed for the moment.
Dating back to the 7th century BC, Mazarrón II, was discovered in 1994, but a recent inspection by expert marine archaeologist divers from the National Underwater Archaeology Museum (ARWVA) has revealed it is in far better condition than they expected. A full analysis will be carried out before deciding whether it will be safe to bring the 2,700-year-old vessel to the surface, or whether it should be left where it is to prevent its falling apart. Urgent protection measures need to be taken to preserve the craft, which is described as a unique testimony of naval construction in the western Mediterranean from the BC era. The boat is on the sea floor off the Playa de la Isla beach.
Please, Do Not Touch The Green Dots
On Monday 19th August a team from Mazarrón Environmental Service were involved in the underground disinfestation process against cockroaches throughout the whole of Camposol. The team encountered a serious problem with a number of manhole covers which had been cemented-in, preventing the team from lifting them in order to deal with the disinfestation of cockroaches around the underground pipes etc. These covers have been marked with a green dot and Aqualia have been instructed to free-them-up, in order to allow the environmental team to continue with their disinfestation work.
The Camposol Fiesta was a fantastic success and Sue Tinkler and the volunteers must be congratulated on the successful 3 days.
The Fiesta started on Friday 23rd August and was opened by the Mayor of Mazarrón Gaspar Miras Lorente. More entertainment was provided during the day on Saturday and Sunday, including a giant paella while the little ones enjoyed donkey rides and other fun games and the adults recalled happy memories viewing the classic cars and bikes show. The very successful 3-day fiesta came to a close on Sunday evening with the raffle of beautiful prizes kindly donated by local businesses.
Roman Villa Romana Del Alamillo
It is known that in recent years, the historical and monumental heritage of Mazarrón has been suffering from areas becoming overgrown and being used as rubbish dumps. One such example is the deplorable state of the Villa Romana del Alamillo, a high imperial settlement located next to the RM332 between Puerto de Mazarrón and Cartagena. The site occupies part of the beach from which it takes its name and its foundation is dated to the middle of the 1st century A.D. Originally it was a stepped construction in terraces; one residential, with its corresponding thermal baths; and another industrial area with six pools for the manufacture of salted fish and sauces (Garum) and a set of rooms around a patio. The Department of Historical Heritage and Services aim to return the villa to its original splendour.
