San Javier 21st Jazz Festival – Saturday June 30th – Saturday July 28th
The pianist Chick Corea will receive the Prize of the Jazz Festival of San Javier 2018 after the concert on July 28th.
Chick Corea, one of the greatest pianists of his generation, who has won 20 Grammy awards, has a special bond with Spanish music.
The festival will start on June 30th with bassist Pepe Bao accompanied by his own group with a fusion concert of jazz, flamenco and rock, followed by the American singer Vonda Shepard with a repertoire of jazz, R & B, rock and traditional American music.
Pat Metheny, one of the most admired jazz guitarists in the world, returns to San Javier with a new group on July 6th.
French accordionist Ludovic Beier leads a production of the Jazz Festival of San Javier, with his Montmartre Quartet and violinist Pierre Blanchard as guest artiste on July 7th, followed by the Bilbao band Travellin’ Brothers Little Band, one of the most respected and admired blues bands in Europe with three international artistes as guests.
One of the most anticipated concerts at Jazz San Javier 2018 will be on July 12th with The Mavericks, one of the most significant bands of Americana music, whose eclectic style is nourished by influences from the country, Tex-Mex and rockabilly among others.
On Friday July 13th the saxophonist and funk icon, Maceo Parker will head his own group, considered the most perfect funk band in the world. The other concert will be played by Keyon Harrold, ‘the future of the trumpet’ in a quintet.
Brazilian singer, songwriter and guitarist Joao Bosco debuts on July 14th, followed by tall saxophonist Kenny Garrett, heir to the great Charlie Parker.
Vocalist Sara McKenzie returns to Jazz San Javier on July 20th, followed by the London band Nine Bellow Zero Big Band, exponent of British blues-rock.
Two of the most admired Spanish musicians, pianist Ignasi Terraza and harmonicist Antonio Serrano, will perform accompanied by double bass and drums on July 21st. The night will end with the rhythm of blues with singer and New Orleans guitarist, Walter ‘Wolfman’ Washington.
One of the greatest American jazz singers, Kurt Elling, a baritone of impressive technique, will perform on July 22nd in quintet formation with an exceptional guest, Marquis Hill, one of the most prestigious trumpeters of jazz in the United States, where he has won the Thelonious Monk International Jazz Competition, the most important jazz musicians’ competition in the world.
Kyle Eastwood, the bassist and composer son of Clint Eastwood, also premieres at the festival where he will perform on July 25th with his quintet. Kyle Eastwood also stands out as a composer with works such as the tracks of his father’s films, ‘Million Dollar Baby’ and ‘Gran Torino’. The night will end with the electrifying funk-soul of The Big Sam’s Funky Nation.
The Argentine guitarist Luis Salinas, will star on the night of July 27th with a double concert that will begin with his son Juan Salinas performing a traditional Argentine duo and will end with his quintet performing their own compositions.
The Jazz Festival of San Javier 2018 will end on July 28th with the Chick Corea Akoustic Band with the prestigious double bassist John Patitucci and the spectacular drummer Dave Weckl. The female vocal jazz of René Marie and the piano of Bruce Barth will close the Jazz Festival of San Javier 2018.
The San Javier Jazz Festival will take to the streets with four free concerts:
The Spanish Domisol Sisters & Sedajazz Swing Brothers, will take the vocal jazz of the 30s and 40s to the Plaza de España in San Javier on 4th July.
Mike Sánchez, a British rhythm and blues musician with Spanish roots, will perform on July 18th at the Barnuevo Esplanade in Santiago de la Ribera.
The Bluesfalos will also perform at the Barnuevo Esplanade in Santiago de la Ribera on July 24th.
La Manga del Mar Menor will host the concert of the Caribbean singer Tricia Evy, heiress of the great jazz vocalists, with a quartet of Spanish musicians and Roland Baker as guest artiste on July 26th.
