The RC Mar Menor Sailing Group was formed just over two years ago to promote radio controlled model yachting in the region.
During that time members have become a regular part of the scene at the Seaworld Watersports Centre situated on La Puntica between the beach and the commercial port at Lo Pagan, near San Pedro del Pinatar. Here, in addition to the regular facilities, we also have provision to store and launch our own dinghy. It’s always available on site for setting out the course and invaluable on the rare occasions when yachts suffer equipment failure and need to be rescued.
Most members sail yachts of the International One Meter (IOM) class. However, any model is welcome if it is radio controlled and powered by the wind.
RC Mar Menor Sailing Group is registered as an organisation with the Murcia Regional Authorities and has just become affiliated to the Asociación Nacional de Vela Radio Control, the Spanish governing body for the sport; quite an achievement in a relatively short time.
Three of our members recently competed in an International Regatta at Torrevieja sailing against top skippers from the UK and Netherlands as well as the best of the Spanish fleet. Most members however are happy to compete at local level where the racing is more informal though still competitive.
Regular meetings take place on Wednesdays at 10.30am and currently members are competing for the Mar Menor Trophy, taking place over a six week period. While friendly advice is always available, we also arrange more informal meets to help sort out member’s problems. Racing starts at 11am and to get a bird’s eye view, why not have a drink on the terrace of Bar/Restaurant El Rubio 360 which is directly above the Watersports Centre?
Several wives and partners join us each week and make an invaluable contribution to the organisation of the Group. As yet for some reason we don’t have any lady skippers, though there’s no reason why not and we do have a ‘Ladies’ Day’ in May, so come on girls and have a go!
After racing we invariably transfer to one of the beachside bars for lunch and a natter.
For information about the RC Mar Menor Sailing Group visit our website www.rcsailingmarmenor.com where you will find a link to our public Facebook page with the latest news, results and photos. If you want a closer look at our activities email Stuart or Bev at firstname.lastname@example.org in advance so that we can arrange to meet you as we sail from a secure area.
As well as our own competitions, there are nearby major events in Torrevieja and Almeria in April and October respectively and, thanks to our National affiliation, we will be hosting the very first “Trofeo de Murcia” competition in November. Lots to look forward to, so why not come and join us?
