A consistent performance, over six weeks of competition, gave first place overall in our Spring Series of races to Rob Nichols. The series was reduced to six weeks when high winds blowing off-shore led to cancellation of the second week’s sailing.
There followed a couple of weeks’ casual sailing prior to our summer series. Some concern among the skippers when, on the second week, a dredger appeared and seemed to be taking rather too close an interest in our activities. All was well though when we learned that our good friend Jose, a fellow IOM sailor and member of CN Los Nietos, was on board and had come over for a closer look. He has posted his photographs on our Facebook page.
Spread over seven weeks, the Summer Series has been re-named the Julian Hook Cup Competition in memory of one of the RC Group’s founder members who died suddenly last year. An experienced sailor, Julian not only shared his knowledge within the group, but also encouraged members to travel and compete in open events at other clubs. He made a lasting contribution by setting up the RC Group website and is sadly missed. At the time of writing, Stuart has already established an early lead in the competition, but will he be able to stay in front for seven weeks?
Over the weekend of April 29th – May 1st, two of our members entered the Campeonato de España in Almeria, a prestigious event with many of the best RC Yacht sailors in southern Spain taking part. Conditions over the weekend were, to say the least, variable. The first day went well enough, but on the second day, the forecast 30 knot winds materialised. Racing continued, but even with “C rig”, the smallest suit of sails, skippers were struggling to maintain control. On the final day however the wind was so light that the number of races was significantly reduced in order to complete the competition in a reasonable time. In a fleet totalling 29, our best placed skipper, Stuart Lockwood, came in 17th place; a result that he was, quite rightly, proud of.
