Over the weekend of December 1st and 2nd we held the Campeonato Territorial, Federation de Vela, Region de Murcia Regatta. A total of 24 entries; four from our own Club and the remainder from Groups as far afield as Madrid, Cadiz and the Balearic Islands.
After two days of close competition, first place went to Spanish National Champion Guillermo Beltri. With Miguel Salvador and Gines Romero equal on points, second place was awarded to Miguel by the closest of margins as he had the highest number of first places in the heats.
We are grateful for the support received from the Federación de Vela de la Región de Murcia who also provided the trophies, not only for the first five places, but an additional award for the highest placed competitor from the Region; our own Stuart Lockwood. Our hosts at SeaWorld Lo Pagan once again made their facilities available to us, ensuring a successful weekend and an enjoyable experience for our guests.
As reported last month, the first scheduled weeks racing for our Club Winter Series was cancelled due to adverse weather conditions. The fifth and final week also threatened to be disrupted by a sea fret and a very light, fitful wind. In the event, a shortened series of one lap races was successfully completed. Overall a total of 14 skippers took part in the series with an average weekly entry of 10 boats. Final result was a win for Stuart Lockwood, with Terry Mordan in second place. In third place, another great result for Dave Shepherd in his first year of competition. Well done to the top three skippers and thanks to everyone who took part.
We resume our regular weekly meetings on Wednesday January 9th with casual sailing; a chance to blow the cobwebs away after the Festive Season. Competition for the Mar Menor Trophy will begin the following week.
