Pet Protection
Reminder for pet owners

The time of year (warmer weather) has arrived to start protecting our pets against:
The Sandfly (mosquito): Leishmania disease can be caused by bites from this mosquito.
This can be a narrow collar (Scalibor); waterproof and lasts for 6 months. Good protection against ticks and a small amount of protection against fleas is also included.
Advantix drops; applied monthly on the back of the neck. Also including treatment against ticks and fleas.

Heartworm
Infection is by a certain type of mosquito that carries tiny worms. If your pet is bitten by this mosquito then worms will travel in his/her bloodstream, reproducing and growing into adult worms. They then settle in the heart, as they grow so big and are so numerous that they become restricted in the heart, causing many problems, which can lead to heart attack.

Guardian is an injection that will last for 1 year. The composition of this serum also includes traces against tick and flea but would not be sufficient as a sole protection on its own for the two above mentioned.
or
Cardotek - a tablet (very tasty indeed, as reported by owners whose dogs never spit them out) that you give your dogs monthly.

There are other options available, so please seek advice from your veterinary clinic.

On the last note we would like to mention that, as there are an abundance of ticks around lately and remember that all pets are different. It is still possible, even after applying regular protection against ticks, that your pet may have them surfing or actually latching on. Ticks here in Spain can be quite different in as much as some carry disease, therefore transmitting to your pet. We advise that you check your pet daily and if necessary apply extra protection against ticks and fleas.
