PALS

PALS the area’s leading expatriate registered charity was formed following the disappearance and drowning of a toddler in a swimming pool on Camposol. The local emergency services were magnificent in their handling of this tragedy and a local group sought a method whereby they could put something back into the community. The method chosen was PALS and its aim, to raise money by events and donations to purchase life saving equipment for the ambulance and health centres in and around Mazarron.

To date the equipment has included Electrocardiographs for the Health Centres in Mazarrón, Puerto de Mazarrón, Fuente Alamo and Las Palas. Defibrillators for Mazarrón, Puerto de Mazarrón and Fuente Alamo and for strategic locations in the area. A ‘state of the art’ Cardio test monitoring device, a XL Cyclone defibrillators installed in local ambulances for immediate treatment, an auto clave for Fuente Alamo Health centre and a Jet Ski rescue craft for emergency off shore incidents in all totalling more than 112,000 Euros. PALS also act as a means of obtaining the Spanish/English ‘Tell the Doctor’ book.

This year a new health centre has been promised for Camposol and PALS are putting aside 40% of their net receipts in a fund to augment the equipment when the building is complete. The balance of this year’s money is awaiting meetings with the local and regional health authorities and emergency services. PALS try to keep the administration costs to a minimum and our sponsors help with this although we currently seek support for our ink cartridges and paper.

In order to maintain our cash inflow we have a major program of events and outings and in October there is the popular BBQ on the Beach at Bulnuevo at 13 Euros for masses of food and drink on the 12th. We have a Treasure Hunt and meal starting at 2pm on the 28th, The coach trip to Madrid is all sold out but we have sponsorship forms available for the Walk La Azhoia to Tallante (25th November) and the New Year’s Day swim. Tickets are available for our annual Christmas Ball 9th December and there will be the Trolley Dash draw (1 Euros per entry) on that night.

PALS jointly chair the CAFÉ  (Community Ambulance Fund Espana) to raise money for the purchase and equipping of a rapid response vehicle based north of Mazarrón to cover the Camposol, Country Club, and  Cañada area and of course close to the Totana-Mazarrón Motorway. A Concert for CAFÉ is being held at the Bahia Beach on October 6th Tickets only 5 Euros. Our program for 2008 is in the final stage of production and will be published by November.

We would again thank all those who support us in any way and look forward to seeing you soon. Tickets available from Sheila on 968 138823 or Marion 968 138725. Further information from Ken Payne, President PALS 626 460465
