A recent traumatic experience with one of our pets dying and others we know experiencing the same thing reminded me of the following: Years ago when I was working late on a tractor the Farm Manager asked me into his cottage for a coffee.  An innocent comment I made about his pet dog being a ‘poor soul’ when he was teasing the dog, prompted a long discussion about the subject and the differences between soul and spirit and so on.

My contention was that I believe animals and humans have a soul, but only humans have a spirit. God put a spirit in mankind in order to communicate with Him and this is special and we should take full advantage of it. The soul is the centre of emotions, intellect and decision making, or will in broad terms and it is this mix of factors amongst others which result in a unique personality, which we see in our pets.

Jesus and the disciples never tried to teach that we need to be different personalities. They did teach that we need to change our behaviour, attitudes and reactions, to be us, but more like Jesus in these ways. Jesus loves our unique personalities and those of the animals he created. There are areas of overlap with soul and spirit, but perhaps the ‘heart’ is where it all comes together.

Believe me “Last Christmas I gave you my heart” is a line you will hear many times over the next few weeks. Jesus is the gift of God’s heart. “Then the LORD God formed a man from the dust of the ground and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life and the man became a living being”. Gen 2 v 7.  God gives us the gift of His heart at Christmas.

You can find us on Condado de Alhama in the Al Kasar Centre. Come and join us.  We offer something a bit different. Sit around and chat over a cup of tea or coffee and learn about God and what He can do for YOU.

Opening Times for the Christian Centre are on the website.
