NEST walks are all about sociable people who like meeting people and enjoying themselves outdoors without having to be sporty but liking fresh air and a bit of easy exercise! Whether you come alone or as a couple you’ll be made welcome! We have a nice easy walk and we usually have either a picnic or a three course (at least!) menu del dia in an authentic Spanish restaurant for around 9 euros. The meal is optional of course but most people couldn’t be dragged away by this time, as the easy walks are fun and it’s so easy to get to know people and make friends while walking, that by the time lunchtime arrives, everyone is keen to stay in with our friendly crowd! People who come along contribute to the effort with a 4 euro donation, currently going to Noah’s Arc animal rescue charity. You are also welcome to donate a walk of your own, and forego the 4 euro donation!
NEST actually stands for Nature ESpuña Trails because most of the walks take place in Sierra Espuña, where you’re likely to see wildlife such as Arruis (from the Atlas mountains in Morocco), wild boar, golden eagles and other birds of prey, foxes, lizards and various other things..
The next outing is on Tuesday 20th November when we’ll be meeting at 10.30 am in El Berro village car park in Sierra Espuña (book by phone or email first please). If you’ve never been to El Berro before you can find clear driving instructions on the website (address below). We’ll be doing a walk that involves seeing a Dinosaur’s fossilised footprint and going over a small, wood–slatted–base rope bridge. It’s a very easy walk and going over the bridge is pretty easy too, but you can have your photo taken (bring cameras!) in such a way that you’ll look like an intrepid explorer to show all your friends and relatives who’ll think you’ve been jungle–trekking in the depths of prehistoric Spain! The very easy walk will be followed by a lovely meal in an authentic Spanish mountain restaurant which is known for its particularly good cuisine, but tucked away in a spot you’d never find on your own!
Then, to give you plenty of notice, the walk we’re doing in December will be on Thursday 20th December when we’re going to walk around the Aledo end of Sierra Espuña for a change, starting and finishing at La Santa Monastery. This will be a good 3–hour walk broken up half way with the picnic. (Take the main E15 road from Alhama de Murcia towards Totana and just before you get to Totana there is a brand new roundabout with a turn off, first right to Aledo village, and La Santa. La Santa is a big pink building to the right before you reach Aledo village – just drive past La Santa to the small roundabout and turn sharp right off the roundabout into the La Santa car park and we meet there. This one is a picnic walk so bring a picnic – we’ll be stopping in Aledo and picnicking in a spot which has panoramic views all around! If you are with friends and relatives for Christmas then bring them all along for a wonderful, sociable, Christmas outing and to see another part of Spain!
Just phone, text or email to book your place, and wait for confirmation you´ve been booked in – not forgetting to supply a Spanish contact phone number. You can even book online via the website (but make sure you don’t forget to supply your email address and phone number!) using the online booking form. You’ll also see the list of forthcoming NEST walks there on the website too, as well as a few other interesting and useful things including the most accurate weather forecast you´ll probably ever find! We look forward to hearing from you!
