May outings and walks Well now that sunny hot June is here, there are two very sociable, fun, easy walks to announce for this month! One on Friday 7th June and another on Thursday 22nd June.
Firstly, Friday 7th June, spectacular views over Alhama followed by a delicous meal in an authentic Spanish mountain restaurant! If you get your skates on, or rather your trainers or walking shoes/walking boots/walking sandals on (!) you can do the extremely easy short walk on the 7th June to see fantastic birds–eye views similar to the kinds of views you’d see if you were up in a small aeroplane, over Alhama de Murcia.. This walk was postponed to June because of the terrible rain. It’s been a very wet rainy spring hasn’t it! How nice to be in sunny hot June! Anyone that would have liked to come but couldn’t, now you have a second chance! It’s a lovely little walk – and we stop for a break and chat while admiring the views – before ambling back and then going to a wonderful mountain restaurant in Sierra Espuña for the wonderful four course meal including drinks at approx 9 euros. We may even get a chance to see wild boar if we’re lucky!
THE SNOW HOUSES IN SIERRA ESPUÑA
On Friday 22nd June it’s the perfect time to see the Snow Houses in warmth and comfort, up in the winter⊄snow altitudes of Sierra Espuña!
Book early to avoid disappointment because the restaurant has also got to be booked and can only seat so many.
It’s a very easy walk along a rubbly camino with some slopes. You’ll actually be able to peer right inside a Snow House or two.
In winter you can’t go up there as then you’ll encounter snow, as it does snow regularly at those altitudes in winter and it’s not advisable then, unless you want to try another sort of sky–diving from an icy road in a car! So now’s your chance to see the snow houses in comfort, warmth and safety amongst friendly people! Snow houses were early forms of refrigeration. Snow was packed in them to make ice which was later transported by donkey to places as far as Cartagena on the coast where the ice was used in medicine as well as for the rich who could afford ice cream in those days long ago. A lot of the ice melted en route, but enough got there to make it worthwhile. It would have been such a different life style in those days that we can hardly imagine it!
So come along and see for yourselves, and get a taste of the past, a taste of Sierra Espuña, the chance to make new friends or see old ones, and the chance to see wildlife – sometimes we can see Arruis which are like deer but different! Of course luck plays a part in that ’ bring binoculars if you can too! Not least, a great highlight of the outing is the lovely friendly 3 course meal to round it all off with! You're not obliged to come for the meal but people generally love them. We always go to an authentic Spanish restaurant for a menu del dia which is usually 3 or 4 courses and includes drinks for approx 9 euros. NEST walks often go to mountain restaurants which are all amazingly good service, food and prices ’ as well as being in spectacular and beautiful surroundings.
Book your place by phoning 968607927 or 679002147 if the landline is engaged (sometimes on the net). You can also send texts to the last number.
Once you’ve booked, then we meet at El Berro at 10.30am.
You can get directions to El Berro by visiting the website as well as a list of future walks –
