NEST stands for Nature ESpuña Trails, because most walks are centred on this area and the walks are generally easy walks with socializing as a main feature. We walk and talk, keeping gently fit and enjoying the views and fresh air at an extremely easy pace, without striding out getting puffed out! There is usually a delicious 3 course meal at an authentic Spanish restaurant for only about 9 euros at the end of the walk, or a friendly picnic. The social side of the walks and meals is the main reason most people like to come along! It’s a great way to meet new people and make new friends and you can discover parts of Murcia you’d never know existed! There is plenty to see of interest on NEST walks and not only that – your 4 euro contribution is currently going to Noah’s ARC charity.
Come and join us on Thursday 20th December – we’ll be going for a special three hour pre–Christmas picnic walk taking in Aledo with spectacular views, starting and finishing at the Monastery of Santa Eulalia, often referred to as La Santa. So bring some food and something to drink, although it should be possible to buy something to drink in Aledo if you don’t want to carry much. Feel free to bring mince pies or anything else Christmassy to share and get into the spirit of Christmas in the fresh air! If the chapel at the monastery is open on our return, it might be possible to see the very ornate wooden painted paneled walls there which are phenomenal. We’ll be meeting at the Monastery (which isn’t far from Totana) at 10.30am but please book your place first by phone or email. To drive to the Monastery, go on the main road between Alhama de Murcia and Totana and just before you reach Totana there’s a new roundabout signposted to Aledo on the right. Take that and follow the signs to Aledo and once you’re climbing the mountain road you’ll then see the big pink impressive–looking building of the Monastery. Drive past the building and at the next small roundabout there’s a turning to the right which leads you straight into the La Santa Monastery car park. In fact it–s now a hotel and restaurant but the chapel is very much still a chapel. (We have eaten there many times and this time we’re having a picnic for a change). There are some beautiful surroundings and views involved in this walk which will delight you! It’s an easy walk except for about a 5–10 minute stretch which involves a narrow uneven sloping path, but after this point early on in the walk it’s plain sailing all the way!
There will be a very easy short walk on 31st January that leads to spectacular aerial views over Alhama! This will be followed by a three course menu del dia for appx 9 euros at an authentic Spanish mountain restaurant in Sierra Espuña... with the chance of seeing wild boars and also just possibly Arruis from the Atlas Mountains of Morocco. For this one we’ll meet in El Berro. Please check the time we’ll be meeting when you book your place.
