Whew! We must be mad!

At home at Hacienda

A triples match – three players to a team – takes about 3½ hours to complete, with only little chance to get into the shade from the sun! Ideal on a normal summer’s day – in fact, why we came to Spain in the first place, but not at all comfortable in the intense heat we have had in July and August! Something about ‘Mad dogs and Englishmen……….’ applies to those who struggled on in the Club Day rollups made just tolerable by limiting the ends played and early starting at 9am. Unfortunately, however, our Ladies v Gentlemen’s match scheduled for end July had to be postponed as just prudent common sense.

The Rewards

In the ‘off season’ months of July and August it is normally time to re-group, prepare and practice for the Championship and Inter Club Leagues challenges starting in September and October through to the Spring of 2019. It is also time to attend to maintenance of the bowling green itself and even up the wear on the carpet sometimes by temporarily re-orientating the direction of play by 90 degrees and also perhaps reallocating the playing surface by altering the number of rinks, eg. as last year when we reduced from eight to seven rinks. It is also time to plan for unforeseen constraints – for this coming year the leagues administrators Levante Lawn  Bowls have legislated that league sides will comprise only 5 teams of 3 players instead of 6 as previously. We try to ensure that all members who want to compete at inter club level do, in fact, get the opportunity. The new rules could mean more competition for team places.

Back home we are pleased to congratulate John Smith and Colin Sear who were each elected by Club Members to be our first Honorary Life Members in recognition of past services dating right back to the founding days ten years ago. At the other end of the scale we are very pleased to report renewed healthy growth with some new members being new to the sport and already showing aptitude and skills which the rest of us may have difficulty to compete against. We will see what happens in the Club Championships starting in September and the Mazarrón Trophy scheduled for the same month.

Anyone interested to take up the sport of Lawn Bowls, or keen to renew their interest, will be welcome to come along on any of our Club Days on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Contact Colin Appleton on 605 492 937 or Jimmy Cochrane on 653 093 840 or email to the Secretary at mazarronbowlsclub@outlook.com
