No Luck for Some

Alan Benton delivers
in full flight.

A few weeks ago a number of our in-house 2018 Champions went forward to play in the Champion of Champions Championship along with the Champions of 23 other Clubs in the Murcia and Alicante regions. Last year we had our local Champion Helen Chambers in the Final of the Ladies’ Singles, but this year the cupboard has not been so well stocked! The best performance came in the Mixed Pairs where Helen Chambers and husband Mike were very narrowly beaten in the Quarter Final. Our other representatives in Ladies’ Singles, Men’s Singles, Ladies’ Pairs and Men’s Pairs fought well against formidable opposition including some Spanish Internationalists, but were out of luck this time, but we are looking forward to next year’s challenge.

Winners Richard Cooper Trophy – Billy Faulkner and Brian Robertson

At home in early May the Club held its annual Richard Cooper Trophy Competition organised as a Two Bowl Pairs 10 Ends per match with the winners from 4 leagues progressing to a semi-final and final. It took all day and 5 matches for Brian Robertson and Billy Faulkner to lift the trophy this year again for a second successive time, but not without having to bite their finger nails all the way through. At the league stage they were fortunate to win in the last end over Mandy and Brian Wright.

Runners up Richard Cooper Trophy –
Barbara and Gordon Tottey.

In the semi-final match they were losing going into the last end, but still managed to come out top by a single shot much to the consternation of Barbara Benton who was, as you might say, seemingly mighty displeased with husband and partner Alan. In the final, very well played by all contestants, again it took to the last end for Brian and Billy to win over strong contenders Barbara and Gordon Tottey. A most enjoyable day in the sun and well organised by Colin Appleton.  Prizes and the Trophy were presented to the winners and runners-up by President Jimmy Cochrane.

Coming up as we write is the start of the Spanish National Championships with Brian Robertson set to defend his Spanish National Men’s Singles Champion title won by him last year. We have other members competing in the Men’s Singles and two pairs in the Men’s Pairs.

On Wednesday 10th May the Club celebrated winning the Voyager Winter League with a presentation lunch at which the organiser, Mr. Arthur Brown of Levante Lawn Bowls, presented the cup.

On Sunday 3rd June we have the President’s v Captain’s teams match followed by a hog roast.

We have a number of new Members already competing in our domestic competitions in the quiet months between league commitments. There are members around most days, but particularly on the mornings of our recognized Club Days, Tuesdays and Thursdays. Anyone interested in taking up the sport, or joining with us as an experienced bowler will be welcomed  at our rink at Hacienda by contacting Jimmy Cochrane on 653 093 840 or Colin Appleton on 605 492 937, or email the Secretary at mazarronbowlsclub@outlook.com
