The Championship Finals

Mazarrón Bowls Club had wonderful weather for their Club Championship Finals Weekend on 11th/12th March. Somebody ‘up there’ must have been looking down on them as on the following Monday the heavens opened and it rained for two consecutive days!!

This year we had one member, Colin Appleton, who although undergoing Chemotherapy throughout all the qualifying rounds, fought his way to five finals and won three of the singles matches becoming the Men’s Singles Champion, Handicap Mixed Singles Champion and the 4 Wood Intermediate Handicap Champion for 2017. (He didn’t disgrace himself in the team matches either!)

Douglas Macfarlane and Gordon Tottey were Champions in the Men’s Pairs and Douglas won the Mixed Pairs with his wife Anne.

Douglas and Gordon won the Men’s Triples with Helen Chambers, Anne Macfarlane and Di Morrris winning the Ladies Triples.

Helen, her husband, Mike and Gillian Morris won the Mixed Triples and Brian and Sheila Robertson, George Thomson and Jim Coughlan won the Mixed Rinks.

Some of these disciplines will now go forward to the Champion of Champion Matches due to take place in April in the Torrevieja area.

The Winter League Season is now over and Mazarrón BC finished in a very respectable 6th place in the LLB Southern League under the Captaincy of Brian Robertson and Mazarrón Mariners, under the Captaincy of Brian Rogers, finished 3rd in the South Alicante Voyager League.

The South Alicante Summer League starts on 7th April and, although there are fewer teams, it is a test of endurance for many people as with the weather getting hotter as each month goes by, it means that by the time it finishes in June many members are falling by the wayside as it is just too hot to bowl.

In March our Bi-Annual Friendly Match with the Indalo Bowls Club based in Almeria took place, followed by a Hog Roast at the Spaniard Inn. Results of this match will be published in May.

Don’t forget MBC always welcomes new members, so come along on a Tuesday and Thursday morning at 10am for a 10.30am start and see what bowls is all about You will be given a warm welcome and an opportunity to try the game.
